14th Month Pay for Private Sector Employees

Only in the Philippines do they raise wages by adding non-existent 'months' to the calendar. 




Senator Vicente Sotto III has filed a bill requiring employers in the private sector to give their rank-and-file employees 14th month pay.

In Senate Bill 2, Sotto said the recent P10 increase in the minimum wage is too small as wages have decreased due to the rise in prices of basic commodities.


“The 13th month pay is gobbled up by Christmas expenses. We need extra earnings in the middle of the year to help in school and medical expenses,” he said in the explanatory note.


Under the bill, rank-and-file employees regardless of their employment status, designation, and irrespective of the method by which their wages are paid provided that they have worked at least one month during the calendar year are entitled to 14th month pay.


It states that the 13th month pay shall be paid not later than June 14th and the 14th month pay shall be paid not later than December 24th every year.


It added that the minimum amount of the 14th month pay shall not be less than the monthly basic salary earned by the employee. —JST, GMA News
