OK, turns out she had split (not legally) with her husband in the Philippines and was already living with another Filipino in the Philippines. She left her son with her mother when she went to work in New Brunswick, Canada.

There is a casino there that I think hires OFWs.

My wife thinks she has only been there a year or so.

She is 30 years old and her new husband looks to be around 70.

I suspect that Canada isn't that different to The UK - they take folk getting married at their word.  So when I married for the 2nd time I was asked if I'd been married before.  Of course I said 'yes' so was asked to produced my decree absolute to confirm I was free to remarry which I duly did.

I could have bluffed and stated I had never been married and no one would have known.

Some period of time later I could have been 'caught out' and jailed (rightly) for bigamy had I lied and I prefer this system which places the emphasis on people to be honest but punishes them for lying.

My wife was wondering, "how could she legally do this"? She hasn't told her parents or her Filipino husband, which seems to indicate she knows she did something wrong.

According to my wife this is quite common - particularly for Filipinos who work and marry say in SNG or HK - It's a trick for them to get a green card and become legal in US or Canada etc...

Also happens a lot in the Middle East - they go there 1) to work and 2) to get rid of a bad family arrangement by finding someone else to hook up with...

Not very Roman Catholic but I guess that's what happens when you don't allow divorce...

She's looking for instructions perhaps?

If he finds out she will be supporting him with monthly cash to keep him quiet.  Of course it will actually be her new husband paying.

In the USA, while it wouldn't be legal, it would be pretty easy to do, at least in some states.
All states really, and probably multiple times in each.
