'Credible terror threat' prompts closure of all LA public schools

Recommended Posts

Hoping it is a false alarm but either way, the person who sent the warning wins (unless caught) because of all the money that will be spent.. :(

DEVELOPING: All of Los Angeles' public schools were closed Tuesday due to a "credible terror threat," officials said.

A member of the LA Unified School District Board of Education reported receiving a bomb threat, police said. It was unclear when the threat was made and which school board member received it, but the situation prompted the district to close all schools effective immediately, and order students and staff to stay away from all campuses.

Police and the FBI were investigating the threat, which was described as "electronic."

Schools Superintendent Ramon Cortines said every school in the 640,000-student district would be searched. The district, the nation's second-largest, includes more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools. It covers Los Angeles as well as all or parts of 31 smaller municipalities and employs nearly 60,000 people.

"I think it is important that I take this precaution based upon what has happened recently and what has happened in the past," Cortines said. MORE

"I, as superintendent, am not going take a chance with the students."

- Superintendent Ramon Cortines

Lee..  I agree..  but not in quite the way you intended.

After previous events, I hear a lot of rhetorical bravado along the lines of "these terrorists will surely lose, because we are strong and we will not live our lives in fear"..   Well..  in this case it seems that school was cancelled for 640,000 students, at over 1000 schools, as a result of the email equivalent of "BOO".  As tough as it might be..  living life without fear means keeping the schools open.

A student posted a threat to get out of finals perhaps?

Back in my day, they would just pull the fire alarm.

A 'credible' terrorist threat has lead to all schools in Los Angeles being closed for the day.

A police spokesman said the measure would save hundreds of children's lives, whether the threat turned out to be genuine or not.
