Strongest hurricane on record set to smash Mexico

I have to say I don't recall ever hearing about a hurricane hitting Mexico (or California) on that side before.  Maybe I just never paid attention.

Looking at the rainfall forecast for the next 5 days it looks like Texas and Louisiana will be having bigger problems with flooding than Mexico.

It's hard to believe that less than 24 hours ago the strongest hurricane ever to be recorded was approaching the coast of Mexico and now it is not even recognizable on satellite. Also, the latest news out of the areas that saw a direct hit continue to be good.

"In the early morning hours of Saturday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto delivered some very good news: The hurricane, which could be the most powerful on record, had caused less damage than what would be expected for a storm of that intensity and the government had received no reports of deaths."

"Univision News reports that the governor of Colima, the state most affected by this storm, said that so far they had only received reports of "downed trees" and that they had received no reports of "victims or damage to the infrastructure"

Looking at the rainfall amounts coming out of Mexico, even they have not been as impressive as you would expect with such a strong storm. The highest amounts being reported so far have been in the 150mm to 250mm range and that was only right along the coast. Most areas are seeing between 50mm and 100mm. To compare, Lando brought 700-800mm of rainfall to much of central Luzon last week with Baguio reporting 1025mm (40.3 inches). Of course Lando was a slow mover compared to Patricia.

It is really amazing how fortunate the people in the path of this storm were. Things were looking pretty grim yesterday at this time.
