How bad are Filipino doctors?

Recommended Posts

One of the reasons why I find medical care totally unacceptable in the Philippines is because I have experienced superior care in other third world countries.

The problem with the doctors here is that they attempt to use western style diagnostic techniques, but they lack the diagnostic tools that western hospitals have as a matter of course. Working within this framework requires better diagnosis skills and requires proactive doctors. About all a Filipino doctor can do is order a CBC and Urinalysis and try to guess what the disease is. In fact, it seems like they run a CBC for every little case. They seem to have forgotten about actually observing the symptoms of the patient. The end result is that you may or may not leave the doctor or hospital with any kind of assurance that you will be on your road to recovery.

In Thailand, the doctors understand the limitation of diagnostics tools available to them and decide what the disease is most likely and then look at how they can treat it. They actually look at the symptoms. Knowing that their tools are limited, they use the symptoms as the guide. The end result is that you leave the Thai hospital or doctor's office with medicine and reasonable assurance that you are on your road to recovery.

I really loathe Filipino doctors. I know there are a few that are good, but every doctor I have ever come across here is a quack. My wife disagreed with the quack statement until she understood that a doctor who goes to medical school can still be a quack.

Case in point, my youngest son developed common cold with difficult breathing. My wife took him to the doctor and the doctor gave antibiotics because he decided it was a lung infection.

Two days later, my son developed diarrhea. My wife took him back to the doctor. The doctor asked what kind of milk he was drinking and my wife said UHT milk. The doctor laid into her and blamed her because she wasn't giving him Nido brand milk and that 19 month old children can't drink regular milk. He admonished her to buy Nido from him. She gave my son Nido brand milk.

At this stage(I was out of the country), I told my wife the doctor was a quack doctor and that she should stop the antibiotics, buy some yakult and gatorade or oral rehydration salts, go to an air con hotel and let him recover. I was ignored because of family pressure......they said I wasn't there and I didn't know as much as the doctor.

Within two days, he not only had diarrhea but he also began vomiting uncontrollably. Within a day, my son became so dehydrated that his eyes were sunken and he couldn't even cry tears. She took him to the hospital and the hospital decide he needed to be on IV fluids. They pricked him a dozen times but couldn't a vein. They told my wife to take him someplace else because they didn't want him to die in their hospital. This was the number 1 hospital in the city she was in.

She took him to another hospital and they tried another 7 times to put on an IV, but they couldn't do it. The best they could do is put my son in an air con room, give him oral rehydration salts and let him recover. Eventually the vomiting stopped, the diarrhea stopped and he made a full recovery.

After my son had recovered, my wife could finally see just how much she was taken advantage of by the doctor and hospitals. They treated her like an idiot and belittled her. She has just as much anger as I do for the Philippine medical system.

I was totally appalled by the medical treatment. That quack doctor needs to be strung up. The reason why my son was drinking UHT milk was because I didn't trust the quality of the water. Asking someone to mix up Nido powder with possibly contaminated water is criminal in my book. The UHT milk is regular milk and that's what just about every baby in the states drinks. I have no doubt that UHT regular milk from Australia is of higher quality than Nido powder mixed with possibly contaminated water here.

And....we all know, at least I think we do, that diarrhea is a side effect of antibiotic usage. Of course, Dr Quack didn't think of that, he just wanted to sell some Nido powder and leave me with a 12,000 peso medical bill.

Maybe if all I had was Philippine or US experiences to go on, I could say they did the best they could, but I know better. I know that in Thailand, when he went back with diarrhea, they would have just prescribed some Disento and all would have been OK. Oops, I shouldn't prescribed, they would have given a bottle of it. $3 out the door for the doctor's visit and the medicine.

Needless to say, even if I was dying, I would think twice about going to a Filipino doctor. Show me a good Filipino doctor and I will show you an honest Filipino politician.

I felt sorry for what youve experienced here, but you can stay in a country where you think you can be happy and comfortble. Thailand i guess is a good place too. ;)

Well,i got one for you,but you need to get ill first before i can show you to him.

Better choose the worst kind of illness so i can be proud of our filipino doctor too! ;) Promise i can ask him a free PF for you.

Plenty of things make me happy here in the Philippines, unfortunately when I compile any list of pros and cons of life here, the quality of medical care is the biggest negative. Yes, cost is a factor in that. The cost of medicines are the highest in Southeast Asia. I think the high prices of medicines is criminal and some people need to be hanging because of how they are literally raping the poor who need the medicines. (Come on, ask me to compare some prices!)

Now, you said you had a good doctor who treated one case well. I have already posted two stories about three different hospitals and two different doctors in diverse parts of the Philippines.

Let's not even talk about the problems of pay first, then treat......another action I find criminal.

Wow...Hope i don't get sick in the P.I

How about flying to Hawaii for treatment or an operation if it's critical ? I think hospitals in Hawaii accept Medicare and US health insurance.

treated one case

I did not say that i have a doctor who treated one case,I HAVE LOTS OF DOCTORS THAT I CAN REFER TO YOU.

Well i can give you referrals,PM me when you needed help. I can refer to you PEDIA,OBEGYNE,RESPIRATORY SPECIALIZATION, CARDIO(HEART )AND GI ( Gastro Intestinal)

There is one specific hospital in Quezon City and it is accredited by the US of America. It passed the standard that they set,you can also go there if you want.I think St. Luke Hospital is the name of the Hospital. In my own understanding, they cant be accredited if they did not qualify. So if this hospital passed in the standard that they set, i will think it might pass yours too.

I can agree with you in somethings ,like bad Filipino Doctors ,but all i was saying with regards to some guys posts ( not yours) dont generalize.

I personally dont care what you wanna do when you get sick. I just wanna let you know that some of the doctors here saved some lives already and i guess they are just worthy to recieved some possitive comments.

It was painful when my neice died, but we knew already that she got a worse congenital disease, that doesnt make our PEDIATRICIAN a bad doctor. ;)

Pearl I hope your not thinking I am generalising,

as for St Lukes I was there four months ago and whilst it might be accredited I found the building to be old and rather worn out. the waiting room for the specialist was more like a cupboard it in no way compares to the hotel facilities at the Baumengrad in Bangkok.

Although I doubt that the building has much to do with the practice of medicine and I am sure that there are many good specialists and work done there.

But why then do most insurance companies opt to fly the expatriates out to Singapore if possible?

With regards to water, our baby since birth has been using Absolute Distilled Water. Hospitals and pediatricians recommends using distilled water either Absolute or Wilkins for mixing baby formula.

One time I inquired to our pediatrician if I can switch from distilled to purified water, she said to avoid illnesses for our baby to just continue using distilled water until he's old enough.

Contaminated water is one of my less worries, it's the cross contamination that I'm wary when it comes to my baby.

I had a cousin who got an operation in Orange County California. They left a sponge in her which rotted and cause her major problems. they had to operate again and remove a major portion of her intestines and other things. It was a disaster and her life was ruined. Dont act like bad things dont happen in the US medical community as they happen all the time. I have family that are nurses in the US and if you were to hear the horror stories that have told you wouldnt have such great trust in the average doc in the US.

Dont forget, a big number of US doctors are increasingly coming from "3rd world countries" like India and the Philippines. Wouldnt it be funny if the Mayor wound up getting a Filipino doctor in the states who has only been out of the Philippines for a year or two.

You are talking about infant formula, I ssuppse. I am talking the milk kids drink. The doctor somehow thought that milk that needed to be mixed up was superior to actual milk.......quack, quack, quack. He wanted to sell milk...money was more important than honesty. quack, quack, quack. Kids above 1 year of age can drink and do drink regular milk with no problems. I am sorry, but I trust Dr Spock more than I trust a quack, quack, quack with a degree from a a Philippine medical school.

my mother says I started drinking cows milk at 4 months.

My son here drinks the same bottled water we drink. He's never been sick yet - 6 months old now.

However, it is possible for a child to be lactose intolerant and need soy milk.

There is no hospital accredited by the US of America in the Philippines. I think you are trying to say that St Luke's is accredited by the US Embassy? If so, this is what the US Embassy has to say about hospitals in the Philippines:

Hospitals in and around Manila often offer high-quality medical care. However, even the best hospitals may not meet the standards of medical care, sanitation, and comfort provided by hospitals in the United States.

The US Embassies doesn't recommend or accredit any hospital or doctor but do provide names of hospitals and doctors for guidance purposes.

St Luke's is accredited by the Joint Commission International. It accredits hospitals around the world, but it doesn't man that a hospital has the same level of service as a US hospital. It sets a minimum standard. By the way, the JCI doesn't accredit US hospitals.

Now for this statement:

In my own understanding, they cant be accredited if they did not qualify. So if this hospital passed in the standard that they set, i will think it might pass yours too.

The Philippine Department of Health also accredits hospitals, but I don't know if I trust their standard and it's currently not the same standard that the US has....or maybe it is and hospitals just bribe their way through it?

For the JCI accreditation, you should read up on it and see just what they are accrediting and whether they are accrediting the doctors or not...and even if they are accrediting to the same level of a typical western hospital.

Well, at least you are coming around to what I said. I said most Filipino doctors are bad, not all. Just like most politicians are dishonest, not all.

It was painful when my neice died, but we knew already that she got a worse congenital disease, that doesnt make our PEDIATRICIAN a bad doctor.

Did the doctor make a mistake? That's the question. In my cases, the doctors have made blatant mistakes that a plumber in the states wouldn't make. Stupidity, ignorance, and a pompous attitude makes for a bad doctor and the Philippines has plenty of them.

Your mother is a bad mother, at least according to Dr. Quack. He said that kids shouldn't drink cow's milk and should drink the Nido that he sells instead. Up to what age I don't know, but he said that about my son when he was 20 months old. He insulted my wife and said she was mistreating him by giving him cow's milk. When I got back to the Phils, it was all my wife could do to keep me from going to his office and drop kicking him.

Bottled water is ok, most of the time, but there is a chance for contaminants. Boiling bottled water is the way to go. My wife had been staying with her mother in a remote area so things were less than sanitary and the only "clean" water available was boiled water so we went with those small cartons of UHT milk bought in bulk.

My neice died for a congenital illness. She got it, even before she was born.

She was just one month old when she died, coz she got no capacity to dispose or deficate, her intestine did not function,i forgot the real term they were using (heirshsprang) i am not sure with the spelling. We tried our best to save her but it is her time,we dont own our life.

It was not the doctors fault,we knew it, though its painful but we tried to accept it and move forward. My sister is feeling better now.

It is her 4rth bday today,we got small celebration, hmmmm cant invite you its too late.

I dont wanna argue or tried to defend coz it doesnt really matter to me if you guys feel comfortable here or not.You got your choices in life, its all up to you to decide. I also wanna give up about referring someone to our family doctors. I am not afraid that you wont be contented, but what i am afraid most is for my doctors to be insulted and embarrassed.

If you are here living in my country, you must find ways to get medical treatment at your standard. But i guess it seemed that it cant reach up to your standard. Now,i suggest you better not get ill while your still here.Drink lots of vitamins, especially vitamin C to avoid being sick, it will help.

They say ,AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE(CLEVERNESS).

Or if you cant prevent, just try to hold on until you will reach to other countries for treatment,Singapore, Thailand,America and other countries as long as its not Philippines.

Just also make sure that youve prayed much,so you will be protected against accident, coz i dont think so that you got time to fly to other country.

By the way, i am just curious, what you gonna do if you really get ill here?
