Pro surfer survive bashing by locals at Philippines surfing event.

If they had a beef against him, they should have been ballsy enough to fight him one on one, not FIVE on one.

Cowards, is what they are.

In Texas we refer to it as an attitude adjustment.   I have lived in the Surigao City, Dinagat Island and Siargao Island area for 7 years now. In all that time I have had no problems with the locals

Why to people keep referring to it as a "fight"?   It was not a fight.   They wanted the guy removed and they removed him. (if it was in America the six armed cops would have probably put a dozen

Guy is a prick. Not the first time he has pulled shite like this.

Was always going to happen to him one time or another.

Good job

Great attitude you have there , good role model stuff for the family , I was just wondering if decent people would send a couple of officials over to him and escort him from the beach.

But nah you have it there , just send in the heroes in a pack to belt the crap out of him in front of everybody , at least all the kids know what to do know if someone else does something wrong.

So, because he drifted over, he deserved to have the shit beaten out of him by five (5) other men? Bullshit.

He was actually out in the surf, interfering with the final heat after he had competed. He has a history of doing this, and I'd guess that he was interfering with these guys friend, while he had a shot at an $8k prize.

I'm not saying it's right... but the guy was messing with someones payday.

I wish I knew more about this guy so I could form a more objective opinion.  If the guy is a well known arrogant bully who likes pushing people around I have no problem with 5 much smaller guys getting together to teach him a lesson.

But I dont know.  All I know is that I love to hear about bullies getting some of their own medicine.  Do you have more info on this guy Tony ?

As we all know bullies count on the fact that other people are scared to stand up to them and that only by forming a group can they be dealt with

Well, I wasn't there. So, I can't say one way or another. However, I do know that five on one is a typical way for Filipinos to fight. I would have a Louisville Slugger ready for them when they tried it again.

To give you an idea of how "tough" these guys are, I had two come up to me, one with a pistol in his hand, one night. I not only didn't give them what they want - I also chased after them, the worthless little fecks.

Yep , a total asshole , who should have been escorted from the beach and put on the boat , not wacked around by the vigilantes ,

when do you start raising the bar with this stuff instead of the typical you offended me and now it is time to die shit.......

It is because they are not very tough that it took 5 of them to take on this strong Australian bully

 [ maybe !  haha

so 2 tiny filipinos are attacked by a 400 lb American and you think that of their 2 choices - one being to put a cap in you - that they made the wrong  choice and should have shot you instead    ???]

of course if their pistol was anything like the guns held by most security guards here there werent any bullets in it anyway .

I am not a surfer but I assume its pretty hard to paddle a board while holding onto a Slugger

If I was still on the Gold Coast I would , but no , if he was aggressive that would be different , but being a pest is another story ,

hell make him persona non grata if he is a problem , but belting someone up in public is not a good look , especially for family's that may be in attendance.

Cloud 9 is a very friendly and accessible break, some of these guys only get one shot at a competitive payday, and a pro just goofing about is extremely disrespectful of the whole event.

What bats and bottles? as a get even move , please , a very bad advertisement for the Philippines and how they deal with a situation that should/could be dealt with in a much better way.

Even if the guy is a prick they just slid below his level.

If the guys behavior was out of line like the second account indicated and he has a history of this type of behavior, then he probably got what he deserved. This is coming from someone who was once an asshole towards some guys in Germany  many years ago and it was bottles and cue sticks rather than bats that were used. I really can't remember much about the encounter, much less how many were involved exactly, but it was a lot. When I finally woke up with the police hovering over me I then had to explain that I was being an asshole. That was actually one of the few things I could clearly remember. Was I angry at the guys who beat me and left me bloodied and unconscious on the sidewalk? Not really, because I knew I was being an asshole at the time and I deserved what followed. It doesn't matter what country you are in, if you are being an asshole and you cross paths with a group of people who are not going to put up with your crap, then don't be surprised when they put you in your place.

didnt something similar happen to someone else acting like this guy ?  As I recall his name was Bob Ward - and people seem to have supported what happened to him.

Hell a good number of expats need to be beat if all that requires is that you be an asshole...

Now, someone should go let those thin skinned assholes know what it's like to out number someone in a fight.

Fight them the way they fight - like pussies.

A little money to someone in jail would work as well, to give them a bit of a lesson.

Well, my military background tells me that if you have to get into a fight, bring everything you've got (which was exactly what they did). It's all about bringing overwhelming force to a fight (if you actually intend to win). The guy has a known reputation for being an asshole and a bully, and he has messed up surfing competitions in the past. Their intent wasn't just to confront him. That obviously hasn't worked in the past. They wanted him to get the picture that he was no longer welcome on the island. I suspect that the bats were so they could break his surfboard rather than just for beating him mercilessly. They DID break the surfboard, and he only suffered bruises (no broken bones), which to me says they didn't intend to kill the guy.

The result they desired was what they got. He no longer has a surfboard (so he can't mess up any more surfing competitions), he is scared shitless thinking they will come back to beat him up some more (so he's staying out of sight), and now he's just looking for a safe way off the island. That was exactly what they wanted. There are no Marquis of Queensbury rules outside the ring. If all you want to do is get a broken nose and some busted teeth, then by all means, just fight a big guy straight up. If the intention is to let the big guy know he is no longer welcome (and losing isn't an option), well...then you don't take chances.
