Is it really more fun in the Philippines?

I think that's right!

Word of mouth recommendations - nothing to do with the Philippines Tourist Dept.

Plus, Australia is quite Asia-centric these days.

And there are many randy men in Oz! particularly out in the bush/ back-blocks - Lol!

ps. it would be interesting to get the gender breakdown of visitors to the Phils. I suspect it would be rather skewed!

word of mouth is correct and its often goes... you can live like a king there and the women love old foreigners

That Masked Man

you are misinterprreing the very figures you have posted. The Philippines only seems to 'hold its own' with visitors from 'developed countries' with American tourists. With everyone else, like it is miles behind. For example, after Americans, Australians are the #2 kano-type tourist to the Philippines (they are #10 in Thailand). Despite that almost FOUR TIMES more Australians visit Thailand, than the Philippines.

if you look at the figures Asian and not kano tourist figure in Philippines arrivals just as much as they do in Malaysia and Thailand. The average tourist to all three countries is not a farang or a kano at all, but Asian. Malaysia does well with Asian families-with-children, much much better than the Philippines does, there is whole resorts in Malaysia that cater to Chinese families with young children that have arrived, not over the causeway from Singapore but from China and Taiwan, by plane. You just do not see this, tourist families with young children, anywhere in the Philippines. They stay away. They research it, and decide that there are better/safer/better value for money places to go.

Only if you look at neighboring countries in Asia. More tourists from Japan and South Korea come to the Philippines than to Thailand. Where the Philippines lags is attracting tourists from nearby countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and China. With China that is a decision from Beijing. For the rest, there is little they could get in the Philippines that they could not get back home, so why not visit someplace more "exotic"? But for Americans, Koreans, and japanese, there is a lot in favor of visiting the Philippines.

The number 1 choice for Koreans tourists is the Philippines. Boracay is in the top 20 destinations for Chinese tourists. Its me fun campaign was advertised in California, USA.

Exactly! There would be a lot more Chinese if it wasn't official policy in Beijing to discourage visiting the Philippines.
