VA Healthcare in the Philippines?

Now, I think I will have to 'fight' with them one more time 'cause they just will NOT even attempt to exercise a little common sense.

Supposed to go back by Aug for annual visit, so since we have to be up there for 2 days for wife's med at St Luke, tried to get appointment for then. No-they will make appt in Aug. Isaid, we're leaving late Aug and that is too much of a hassle, and I'll just wait til Sep when we're back home.

Get letter saying probably can't do that since it will take at least 3 months to get appt back there.WRONG More bs.

Call my clinic in Florida, and guy says no problem, call before you leave Philippines and we'll schedule you in Sep when you're back-with same doctor I had for years.

Now-are these folks up in Manila going to stress me out and hassle me by making/threatening me that I have to go in Aug or be penalized some way.

Stay tuned.

Bill you should be able to cancel the appointment - they will hassle you just tell them in conflicts with personal business that had been scheduled before hand.  They will demand to know what that personal business is - tell them it is none of their business - thus the term Personal business - if you are lucky they will reschedule your appointment for some time after you have left the Philippines.

It's a joke!!!!!! I'm 100% and LACK of care is one of the reasons we are returning to US. If you are not retired military and have any health issues, do NOT come here expecting any REAL care, unless,

One can have all the medical insurance needed but if you have a heart attack or minor accident and lie bleeding to death.....there is NO 911 to call and save your life.....thats the risk one takes liv

The VA cutbacks are really starting to show.   I went for my prostate exam today, and instead of lube the doctor spat on my asshole.

I just don't get it. Why are they like that? Seems to me that if anything they should be giving vets the benefit of the doubt instead of going the other way with it. Someone said you could get meds from them (maybe) for non sc issues but I don't even want to fool around with them for that. Seems easier just to reach in my pocket and pay, so that's what I do.

I take 10 different medications - one is for a non service connected issue.  I don't know what the cost is here, but back in the States it is pricy so I feel blessed that I was grandfathered in.

Every Vet is different - I don't know what your non service connected Meds are, how expensive they are - another Vet may have a lot of very expensive Meds so to them it is important that they are grandfathered in.

However, with that said Thank You for your Input on the subject - it is always welcome

Thing is Mike-I told them we're leaving late August, and I would just wait 'til we got back to Florida for my next appointment.

Sent Mayella 'nother email Friday, saying August is too much of a hassle since we're leaving and that, again, I could see doc in Florida. Curious what reply will be next week.

I understand the term "grandfathered in" but don't know the criteria here for that or even why you'd need to be "grandfathered in". JMO but it seems the Manila opc makes up it's own rules as they go along because there are a few that seem contradictory to the way the rest of the VA operates.

Why would/should you need to give them a reason for canceling an appointment? Personally I'd tell them or anyone else because it is my option to cancel if I choose to and I don't need to give them a reason.

Yeah, but--BUT they can require you to go once a year, and I have heard of guys actually getting benefits cancelled for not going.

It's been 15 months since I was at the VA and they haven't cancelled me yet nor have I received any threats that they might. But if they want to push the issue and send me a plane ticket I'll accommodate them :)

Greetings!

Correct, the Manila VA does not operate like any other VA OPC.

They were originaly only for Philippine Scouts. US persionnel were added later, and on a limited basis.

The annual visit, Muster it was called, was to verify te Scout was still alive. If he did not show, his check stoped.

This is the short of it. Rescheduling a visit can be done, but they do not like to as it messes with their scheduel.

My checkup by the cardiolegets can sometimes take an hour. thats only 8 or less persons a day, and many must see the cardioligist during their visit

Ozboy-They have 911 in Davao-something to think about.

Sorry just read this......I had no idea because the last ambulance i had to call urgently, was one owned n operated by a guy in Naga.....just a van type vehicle with a bed and nothing else......PLUS we had to put fuel in it to get to South General Hospital....10 mins down the road..........

So if there really is a 911 or 000 type operation over there, then i am truly AMAZED...

We call 166 I believe that is Fire and Ambulance in Cebu City - you tell them what the problem is they dispatch an ambulance.  I wish they were faster, but once they have gotten to me, night or day, they have been very professional and get me to the hospital very quickly

The criteria is that you have to be enrolled at the Manila OPC prior to November 2013.  If so, you will receive your non service connected Meds (If they are in stock).

I think we have pretty well discussed why Manila is not treated the same as other VA located in the US or Territories.

I didn't get the memo on the cut off date, so bad on me.

Yes, you have discussed it. Does it make sense? No. Funny thing is that the most negative reaction and disbelief I've gotten from someone when I informed them of the manila opc policy came from my congressman's office and staff at the Fresno VA hospital. So it's not just me.

The "policy" appears to me to be whatever your particular pcp decides it is, and it makes NO difference what the "policy" is "SUPPOSED" to be

BUT it could just be my opinion----well-take that back-it's also opinion of couple specialists that opc referred me to here in Cebu, as they were both scratching their head.
