Thanks Paul.

But he wouldn't have been alone on LinC with those views though.

Sadly, that is the truth.

According to him, he wasn't a member, and would not join because of my views. So be it. Let me count the shits I give. Um, none.

When I meet someone new and learn they served, I always make it a point to thank them for their service.

I'm not saying members on this forum cannot have those views. I am, however, saying they will not voice them on this site, or they will be history. :D

My only expectation was based on media stories of drug crazed GIs in the Vietnam - you know the type of thing. I was surprised how professional, well behaved and courteous the troops were, not at all like the stereotype of the media.

Once in a while, a US military vessel will make a call on Sihanoukville, here in Cambodia. When I first arrived, I asked about how the personnel acted when permitted shore leave. Every, and I Mean EVERY single shop owner I posed that question to, said they were ALWAYS very well behaved, when in the city. That made me feel great.

Quite why the person contacted you in the first place is bewildering.

He was trying to convince me that I - we, the forum, needed his input more than that of the military members on the site. I guess he figured otherwise, after my reply.

I am one of those 'bleeding heart' anti gun people. Further, neither I or my family have a military background. However I give all branches of the service my wholehearted support. I'm also an atheist but will attend church once a year for our Remembrance Service. It's the least I can do to show solidarity with those who did lose their lives for my security.

During the first Gulf War I was in Riyadh and had the opportunity to entertain some of the US troops. My only expectation was based on media stories of drug crazed GIs in the Vietnam - you know the type of thing. I was surprised how professional, well behaved and courteous the troops were, not at all like the stereotype of the media. I was particularly touched when my Filipina wife walked into the room and all the guys stood up. I also observed their behaviour around town: exemplary. It's a pity that the whole service can be tainted by one incident such as happened in Olongapo.

Paul, you did right. Your reply says it all. Quite why the person contacted you in the first place is bewildering.

Hum, I need to add GoHuK to my long list of bleeding heart anti gun atheist.

Can I add liberal to that as well?

Wait what a stupid question! Bleeding heart, anti gun and atheist. I think that pretty much says liberal right there.  :biggrin_01:

All kidding aside, thank you.

Too many people think the military are assholes - what they don't realise is that without us they'd be up to their eyeballs in shit

I had 500 little refrigerator magnets of my poem made and give to all first responders I meet

Honor always those willing to sacrifice their tomorrows for your today"

As I have often said, I am anti-gun, and believe they should ONLY be used by the right people.

And, IMHO, that is the military and (perhaps) police.

I was never in the military. (They werent dumb enough to want me!)

However, I did have relatives that served in WW2, one of whom spent several years as a guesst of the Japanese.

Whilst I might disagree with some military actions, the guys on the ground are doing their job, and if one doesnt like what they are doing at one particular time, it is NOT their fault, it is the politicians that give the orders that one should be critical of.

So, I disagree with the person who sent that message.

To refuse to join a forum just because it has one specific group among its membership is foolish.

I don't get it. Even old Winston said something to the effect that some rather rough folks, with guns, guarded you so you could sleep peacefully at night. They are called "sheep dogs" in a world full of sheep and wolves. Even if you are a Liberal you must realize that. If not. Somebody like IS will be knocking at your door.

Mr. Mike

Twelve years in the Navy, three ships, and about one hundred liberty calls all over SEA...later. I can honestly say I can remember only one time when I ever saw any sailors cause a problem while on liberty.  It was in the Hong Kong Hilton lounge. Little Davy Ellis was sitting at the bar drinking a beer with some brit sailors, asked who the old lady was in the large painting above the bar. One of the Brits gave him a irritated look, so we quickly escorted Davy out of the bar.   It was a picture of the Queen!

It was an innocent enough question, because he honestly didn't know who she was, but we were out of there none the less.

All in all, we were very well behaved while ashore.  Why?...because getting into trouble = going on report  = Captain's Mast = disciplinary action!

That is all.
