Yet another expat con man encounter at Ayala - "You got the time?"

Recommended Posts

So a guy in shopping centre asks somebody the time and tries to make small talk, he is branded a con artist a scammer a beggar and now a paedophile. Just as well I wear a watch.

Could be a child molester

Hmm, funny he's still looking for the time at Ayala. And some people gave me shit for just assuming he was a beggar/bum/con man.

Lonely and need to ask some questions about a strange place? Get a life and do what normal people do and find a cafe, bar or other notorious expat hangout and strike up a conversation.

Oh why do I call him a con man? Because that is exactly what he is. He starts off with friendly talk to 'get your confidence' then he strikes the emotional nerve then goes for the money request.

Con man.  Harmless perhaps, but a spade is a spade - he's a con man.

You did not say in your first post that you encountered him before, thus would have known what his next words would be.

Note to self, make sure to never ask any of you guys the time or any other question should I see any of you walking in the mall. Well any of you except contraman, I would know who he is by all the hair and he seems like a friendly enough chap. :P Also except Smokey as I would know him by his red hair and clown nose. :D

And many of us wonder why other westerners are so unfriendly, they have either been approached by a westerner beggar (not likely) or are afraid to say NO, should it happen one day. I will from now on be less friendly as I would not wish someone to post that I am a beggar should I try to talk to them.

Its me :)

I can now see the resemblance. lol

Approaches me as I am going down the stairs to the new taxi stand that is on the same side as the jeepney terminal (which is to the left and across the street). Asks me if I have the time, I'm moving at a pretty quick pace so he has to ask me again, hearing the same phrase twice I turn around to find him asking me again. I tell him what time it is. He goes on to immediately ask me, "Which state? I hear the accent.."

Are you sure it wasn't  the watchguy trying out a new sales pitch?   :)

Is this for me? I am a little dim witted, so sometimes the subtle way off getting your point across doesn't work with me. If it, then yes I am too busy and too important to continuously give this dude the time.

 no was not for you

I ran into him yesterday, same red shirt on. He was cool, I had no problem talking back and forth with him. I knew he was waiting his opportunity to ask, then he did for $10 bucks, haha. I told him a good story why I could not give 10 bucks and then checked my watch and told him I have to go

There is a big difference between passing the time of day with a fellow kano. And striking up a conversation for the sole purpose of obtaing money from them.

One is being friendly expecting nothing but a cheery smile and a bit of banter. The other is a con. They are not interested in you or where you are from. Just what you have in your pocket. Monsoon can obviously tell the difference.

Learn from it or not. Its your choice

The OP's con man had a Hawaiian ish shirt on, does that mean there are a gang of them working the malls trying to fleece us out of a few dollars with their silver tongue.

Where did I say i encountered him before? Instead of being so quick to judge my dislike for foreigner conmen, perhaps you should work on your comprehension skills.

how about the old guy who sits by the wall of the raddison blue i have giving him a bundle of joy a few times he is old and yet keeps one foot in front of the other ..

I just left the Radisson Blu. The only one on the take outside was an over the hill woman with a kid asking for phone numbers and looking to hook up. She was older than me. I couldnt imagine the disgust of being with a woman my own age.

Positive. I have been conned by him many times before. His face is forever burned into my mind.

He has tried getting money from me several times over the past two years at ayala and sm. last time I saw him was at sm bowling alley. He was chatting it up with a few guys bowling and drinking beer towers. He left carrying a baby and a young Filipina pushing a pram behind him.

And yea, that is him in motorboy's photo.
