SkyMan 23,692
Lee, on 25 Aug 2014 - 8:43 PM, said:I have run into a few tourists and even some lonely expats over the years who approached me in a similar way and all they then wanted was some chat and a few questions answered. I think some of us have become so hardened that we forget what it might be like to be a stranger in another country. I feel we should at the very least let them ask for something before we assume they will, and then if they do, then we can tell them to bug off. Maybe but Monsoon said he was obviously on his way somewhere and that's not a good way to strike up a chat. This guy? Edited August 26, 2014 by SkyMan
Lee 17,711
Maybe but Monsoon said he was obviously on his way somewhere and that's not a good way to strike up a chat. My point is, that there is no need to assume the person is a scammer. If we are too busy, then just say so and be on your way or make like you do not understand English but assuming everyone is out to get us IMO is kind of paranoid.

He did not assume everyone was out to get him- but what he did do was make a split second rational decision based on his experiences in life and the actions of one individual who was acting in a suspicious manner . A far cry from "everyone" make like you do not understand English why should any of us have to act like this- ever ?

bounder 1,148
Gee, All of those exciting experiences I miss out on by not living in THE CITY. They don't even try to sell me Viagra outside Robinsons Mall here.
SkyMan 23,692
or make like you do not understand English why should any of us have to act like this- ever ? It can be a good way out of a traffic ticket. Speak only in German (or use a bunch of German sounding words - Gebursen mit mieine tingenhopfel!! etc.) becoming more agitated and pointing behind you or at the traffic light and making some hand gestures regarding the flow of traffic etc. Give him a confused squint as he tries to speak in English and then start in with more Germanlike speech. The embarrassed and confused cop may let you off so as to not bother with you.

Runian 925
bunch of German sounding words lol I did that in Germany Driving back from Romania my car broke a little so I carefully got off the autoban and headed 4 the nearest town. Just on the town border was my salvation toting a tow truck. Waiting for the diagnosis I got bored so I blabbed something German sounding, witch is easy as Norwegian is Anglo Germanic, the guy sitting behind the glass looked at me funny and asked on broken English if I spoke German. No I smiled, only pretend German we had a laugh and chat until the mechanic came back with my broken part in hand "Kans do mine auto fixen " I said, I do not know if that is German but it sounds like it . The guy behind the glass shook making his old office chair crinch. Anyway they had to source the part from a salvage yard up the road in the morning and gave me a ride in the tow truck to a guest house.
