where or How did you meet ?

I have had a look and could not find a similar topic so this is where I stuck it

If wrong, please move or merge.

I was having a discussion with a business associate last night about how we both met our respective partners.

He is an American who has lived in Thailand for over 12 years and has a long term Thai partner.

Me a Canadian born Australian who has worked throughout Asia for over 25 years

None of us met our partners via online dating and the similarities continue.

I am not knocking on line dating, mind you as I have another friend just testing the waters in this regard.

Me, I met "She who must be obeyed" on a business trip here.

I was having some difficulty with a shop attendant, a language issue and this petite lass intervened and translated for me.

This was much appreciated, and as she was cute, I offered to buy her a coffee.

Much to my surprise, she accepted.

A similar thing happened with my friend but in Thailand.

The interesting thing in both cases was the girls were both from reasonably well to do families.

Were both stunners ( well through these old eyes they were) and it was not until both sets of relationship had progressed to the live in stage that their standing commercialy and academically became known.

"She who must be obeyed" now runs the family business and my friend in Thailands partner is an accountant in her families practice.

I mention this because one is always hearing of so many scams involving pinays.

In these two cases, it was entirely different.

Sorry to bore you, I just think it would be interesting of knowing how other members have met their partner.

Still haven't met the right girl yet. The girls I've met in person were from online dating or friends recommendations. Most seem to be scam artists. Sadly, my friends have ended up apologizing to me after the girls they introduced turned out to be less than stellar.

Gosh! I get too many laughs out of this forum!!

Yeah, as you said, it's all good.

Just that I am jealous of the guys that find fantastic girls and settle down with them. I'd prefer to settle down and not flit from 'flower to flower'.

Here's a pro tip to finding a long lasting relationship:  Make her feel sorry for you.  Pity marriages work.  Worked for me and Fred (jtmwatch)

Online !

But in a slightly unusual manner .. i was lurking around a Yahoo chatroom ( lol, remember this was 9 yrs ago ) when i was accosted by someone doing some fundraising !

It turns out she is a teacher, and her school, had won the honour of representing Toledo City in the upcoming Cebu city Sinulog parade .. of course they need funds for costumes, props , food , transportation and accomadation.

Well, i had never heard of Sinulog, and thought , what a scam ! So, politely declined, saying I had recently donated to something in Thailand , which I had , cant remember what exactly.

We chatted with webcam over the next few weeks, and she showed me all the costume making going on, and even the students outside practising their choreography etc .. also I could see the other teachers on pc's, working the internet .. i never did donate ( to that cause )

we chatted as friends for almost 2 years, as she was pretty serious about a guy in Canada, which eventually came to nothing, as he didnt get off his ass and go to visit her..

so i visited ..and the rest is history ...came here every year in April /May school holidays for 5 yrs, eventually retired, and moved here permanently ...into a " train wreck ! " . But thats another story , and I dont yet have the need to share it !

For Real

Living in Asia and a friends wife suggested i meet her friend in the RP. Booked a holiday, visited and my tour guide married me and expatriated to be with me 13 months later. That was 7 years ago and still in love as much as then.

About 20 years ago, was having breakfast in Our Place in Pelaez Street, minding my own business and reading the Lonely Planet Philippines  guide, working out where to go to next. An Aussie guy asked if he could borrow my book, we got to talking, he invited me to his wife's village in Leyte.

Had a great time there, no telephones or running water at the time, but great people.

We kept in intermittent contact in Australia, and a few years later I went out to dinner with him, his wife and his sister-in-law. To make a short story shorter, he is now my brother-in-law and his sister-in-law is now my wife.

Thanks Henk!

I was Stationed with 3rd Marines Division with 7th Comm Bn. and FAP to 3rd Recon Bn. for 2 1/2 years on Okinawa Japan from 1984-1987. A group of fellow Marines would dive all around the island, and I had a small pickup truck and 8-12 of us would pile into that little truck with all of our gear. We must have been a sight for the locals; wetsuits, tank rigs, coolers and a bunch of big kids hanging on the truck as we drove down some of those goat path roads to the secluded dive spot locations. Some were so steep that the guys would jump out and help push that little Toyota truck up some of them. One Sunday I wanted to dive some of the wrecks, remnants of the Japaneses navel ships that litter the bottom around the coast line of Okinawa. I was late to Special Services to get double tank rigs, only solo tanks and no extras. Meant no deep dives, so after I used my single tank I decided to just snorkel while waiting for friends to finish their dives and return to my truck. We had plenty of iced beer to kill before we went back to base. Rule 1 never drink till after the dives.

I met her while snorkeling off Moon Beach on Okinawa that Sunday in 1985, I always wore a full-body grey wetsuit with a black stripe up each side. I was following a coral line and was focused only what was below me. I bumped into something with my head and when I raised up out of the water, a little 4' 11"" 89lb. girl left the water. I was standing in chest high water with a girl standing on my head, screaming and clinging like a cat. She thought I was a shark when I bumped her from behind. She left the water! I was trying to peel her off my head and when she realized I was a man and not a shark, well that is when I first experienced her temper. I finally calmed her down and then we spoke awhile, she told me her name and where she lived.

She was a blue card international solo dancer working for her aunt, she ran a talent agency booking dancers for 2 Hotels and a Casino on Okinawa. They were there to check on the condition that their contracted dance groups were being housed and treated. These were high end establishments, and not the little buy-me-drink-clubs or strip clubs that riddled Okinawa. It took me an hour to calm her down, and once I got her calm, then her aunt came running up. Now she had a temper, she did not like her niece talking to a G.I. at all, and had no problem telling me so. But it was too late I had her address, and somehow I still remembered it. I wrote her almost every day over the next 8 months before I came to the Philippines to visit her. Over the next year I returned 4 more times and spent time with her. I started the paperwork process to marry her before I was discharged and returned to the States. 7 more months of paperwork, and we got her Fiancee Visa. She flew to the States in late 1987 were we were married. We love each other now as much as 29 years ago.

Once I came to see her on X-mas eve in 1986 and caught several military milk runs to get to Clark Air Base where she came from Quezon City meet me. I had drinks in Gate 2, Okinawa; Seoul, Korea; Bangkok, Thailand; and Angeles City, Philippines all on X-mas eve the same day. I miss the military.

nice to hear great stories like this
