Comet Ison, which would have been the brightest comet seen from Earth to date, has been lost on astronomers trackers but are keen to find out what has happened to it.

The "sungrazer" is believed to have been crushed by the heat and huge amount of force from the Sun, even though astronomers were confident it would have survived the conditions.

The European and and US space agencies' Sun-watching Soho satellite saw Ison drift behind the sun but then fail to return.

Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory also lost sight of the comet at this point.

It is likely that the nucleus was torn away from the body of the comet just like Comet Lovejoy's was in 2011 as it approached the Sun.

“We can't be sure - but it's not looking good. We'll have to keep watching.”

Prof Tim O'Brien, associate director of Jodrell Bank, UK, said: "The nucleus has gone very faint, which you wouldn't expect.

Hundreds of thousands of star-gazers around the world had been waiting for one of the most magical light shows ever witnessed by the human eye.

It was expected the light show would even make it all the way to Christmas.

But only a faint spec of light emerged from the tail of the quickly burning ball of dust and ice.

Ison, which is 4.6 billion years old, travelled only 745 645.431miles away from the sun as it passed the star at around 6.30pm today.

But the comet, travelling at 244 miles a second, seemed to fizzle out shortly afterwards.

The icy ball of dust was discovered on September 21, 2012, by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok of the International Scientific Optical Network (ISON), where its name came from.
