$25 a kilo for beef is a little misleading, sure you can pay that much but the vast majority would pay about $10 to $12 per kg, cheap chicken places sell small roast chooks for $8 and comparing Sydney rentals to Cebu is Apples and Oranges...everything else i agree, the Trains and Taxis are a fraction of the Aussie price too, i never take taxis in Sydney and Often take them in Manila....i sold my car back in Feb and pocket the 2000+ per year savings.

Beer (0.5 ltr)........ $6.00

Gasp!

Is that a supermarket price?

That's just plain unconscionable.

What's a bottle of cheap red, like Hardy's or similar, cost?

Not sure.....never been a wine person but beer n smokes are outrages....lots of people r brewing their own now....I drink about 2 bottles of SM here a night n doubt if I could afford that when I return next month....$42/week....a bit too much. Costs me about 140 pesos here.....

Going home n starting from scratch, you would need at least $60,000 in savings plus income earned or you aint gonna have much of a lifestyle....

If I wasn't forced to leave I would stay here....

Rather than impose on another thread I would like to show an opposite view.

After the recent visit of a Aussie friend and my wifes stay there to get her permanent residency, I was amazed at how much more expensive it had become become. Things like a free doctors visit are gone, food prices are up and so are the costs of essentials.

here are some examples......

Vehicle registration.........Oz.........$2500     Cebu......P 5000  or $125

Rent Sydney house....    Oz...... $1000 to $1800 per week     Cebu....P 20 000 per month  or $125 per week

Fuel....                            Oz....    $1.50 per litre or P 60       Cebu....P 50-55 per litre   or $1.25

Beef                                Oz....   $20-$25 per kilo           Barili, Cebu P200 per kilo   or $5

Cigaretes                        Oz.....$18-20 per pack            Cebu...P 20  or $0.50

Beer                                Oz...$7.50 750ml bottle          Cebu  P65  or $1.60

Roasted chicken              Oz...$12                           Cebu P150  or $3.75

I could go on but really Australia is now so expensive that when someone says it's expensive here well I say maybe for you but for me as us Aussies say..........She's sweet here, mate, no fecken worrys.........

My expenses as a single guy in Queensland are different from the above.  I live near some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.

Vehicle registration.      $894 ($1034 less pensioner discount $140) includes 3rd party insurance

Car Insurance               $514

Rent                             $250 per week, one bedroom Govt subsidized condo, clean and new.

Electricity & Gas          $60 to $80 per month, depends if I use aircon/heater

Internet                         $60 per month adsl2+ unlimited

Water                           $6.00 per month.

Fuel                              $1.33 to $1.59 per litre  (aproximately $20 a month)

Roast Chicken              $10 Coles

Eggs                             $4.50 a dozen

Beef                              $6 per Kilo  cheap mince at Coles.

Vegetables                    $3.07 a kilo frozen packet

Milk                               $2 for 2 litre plastic container

Beer                              $15?  two beers a year.

Cigarettes                     $0,  second hand smoke is free :)

Movies                          $4:50 for pensioner

Videos                          $2.00 on Tuesdays for new releases.

Life saving Medication  $6 per 4 weekly for 28 tablets, cost is subsidised by Govt health.  Real cost is $96 a box and in the Philippines P154 pesos per tablet P4,620 per month.

Socialising and dating  $0,  I need to work on my personality.   TV and Internet make up the difference.  I like living alone and doing whatever I want and whenever I want.  I had a mate visit for 3 days recently I think that would be my limit it was so good to be free and alone again.

I live on the age pension which the base rate is $751 per fortnight and I collect another $199 aproximately in Govt subsidies which if I left Australia I would lose along with free medicare which to me is just as dubious as anywhere else.  I would miss the cheap subsidized medications.

I havent included running and service costs for my car.   I try and save and not spend more than my pension but some things can blow my budget.

Its a comfortable but boring life when you are sick adventure loses it attraction.   If I didn't have health problems I would have been living in the Philippines or some other Asian country but the health problems have forced me to live near sound medical help and postpone any travelling.

The base pension works out at todays rate to be approximately P66,000 a calendar month.    I think I spend around P58,000 plus a month here and wonder if it would be better to be in Cebu if my health was good.   Based on my figures which is cheaper?

When I'm not in Cebu…. I'm in Japan…. need I go on?

It isn't as expensive as it used to be, but it's a lot more than Cebu.

I get the feeling the US is just cheap, but cheap food and fuel is because of government subsidies. And cheap housing is because of the bubble bursting…And cheap wages are because of the unemployment figures. And the low dollar makes Cebu look more than it is.

Cebu less expensive than Australia? So what else is new. The U.S. is also less expensive than Australia! In my job I get a lot of Australians coming to California for a vacation and they all say how much cheaper it is here!

but isnt Australia  one of them 20 dollar an hour min wage places

I heard that minimum wage is $17 an hour. If I was about 20 years younger I'd be considering Australia instead of Cebu since the high wages would counter act the high cost of living. However as a retired person from the U.S. living on SS it's out of the question.

I am a Bondi boy so you can go out west for a cheaper cut but go to a butcher in Bondi Junction and ask for your cheap cut.

Yeah there are places in Oz where it may be cheaper than living here but I couldn't live in those places. Perth and Sydney are now expensive places to live cos of the high salary jobs and the stupid federal government. For me it's a no brainer ...I am better off here

Sydney I've heard of but where's Bondi? When  making comparissons we need to make comarisons that make sense. I have no idea where Bondi is or how big it is. On several posts people have said The U.S. is cheaper than Cebu using some Mayberry R.F.D.  type town in a state like Texas as their comparison to Cebu City.

Regarding beef, in Oz I buy the best cos when I eat it I want a tender, juicy nice tasting piece of meat. Yeah sure I can buy chuck steak but really I won't.

Here most of the beef is old and crappy. Like if I buy mince in Ayala for my pasta after I cook it there is like a layer of fat sitting on the top and when you cook it it smells funny.

In Barili, the poor cow is slaughtered during Saturday night and at 6.00am Sunday the meat is fresh. My seller will let me see the cuts she minces and makes sure the steak has no fat. The meat has no chemicals and is so nice and at $5.00 a kilo I challenge anyone here or in Oz to show me a cheaper and better quality product.
