safety tips for jolo travel

Recommended Posts

Yap, In the Sulu Archipelago. I've had several Tau'sug friends--(One of the Muslim tribes that inhabits Sulu). I think all Badjao also trace their roots there. That is why sometimes you see beggars with underwear on their head--they are Muslim.

They said, the US military is already present there sometimes. But I am not a missionary... I'm not even Christian, so what motive is there to behead me? I know the myth propogated by US media "They hate the Western world because we are free." It's not true. I think it is just our immortality and self-centered, spoiled consumer culture that they hate.

If you need tickets I'll buy. <_<

Well, I did meet her older brother and told him all about how I loved his little sister. Everyone said he is a thug, but they were just trying to scare me maybe? He was very friendly. I think Muslm fanatics are quite rare. Lots of Iranians lie here too, and we get along fine (although at the gym, they usually leave the weights lying around, instead of putting them back). Iranians have even told me that I should be Christian

I wouldn't take a bodyguard. I laugh when I've seen US soldiers going around ZC with AFP escorts for safety reasons. I've only felt uncomfortable once and it was far out of the city. That was easily rectified by going somewhere else.

I have no problem gong to Basilan. It's nice out there, but Jolo is a bit different. If one of my wife's relatives invited me, I'd go, but without a good reason, I wouldn't go there just for sightseeing.

About the girl, need I remind you about Jeffrey Schilling and his wife Ivy Osani??

Absolutely right mate but I think you mean immorality. The problem as I see it is that they need cash to carry on and a westerner, be he poor, atheist, young or old will be a target. Now ask yourself, do you feel lucky? You'd be the only white man there for ages, apart from Marines, so it could be fantastic. On balance, if I knew and trusted the family enough to put out the right words, I'd go. If you don't pass it by.

Dirty Harry never lies!

I say go for it. But I would have never posted it on the net cause they monitor this stuff. Be safe and happy regardless!

I think we should all go. there's safety in numbers. And I bet once they realize they gain more from tourism than beheading people, they will accept us. I'm sure lots of divers would love to get into Sulu. They are also upset that this became such a Christian country, even though Islam was here first. Tausug have told me about how they get discriminated against in other parts of the Philippines.
