ILoveCyrus 1,126
Honda TMX.... I understand that is has low gearing for hauling power. I want higher top speed. Was told that I could change the gear ratio?? Yes? No? Worth it? Where and what shop can do this for me?
Brucewayne 3,803
Just buy a sprocket from a dealer with a few more teeth and install it on the wheel, worked for me.
philuk 3,146
More teeth on the wheel sproket will lower the speed what is needed is a smaller sproket rule of thumb. Small driving big. Will give better acceleration lower speed big driving small .for slower of the mark but better top end and economy

shadow 18,483
You have several options. Bigger sprocket up front, smaller sprocket in rear, or convert to 6 speed transmission. THE BOB has info on doing the latter.
ILoveCyrus 1,126
Sprockets seem easier to do than full tranny redo.

Sonny 3,568
all kidding aside..... will I be happy with the increase in Top End speed....? Absolutely____but you may find yourself shifting through the lower gears more frequently.

shadow 18,483
all kidding aside..... will I be happy with the increase in Top End speed....? In reality, the TMX is a great machine, one of the toughest motorcycles ever made. But it is what it is, and it is not a highway cruiser. By changing the sprockets you will gain top end and economy, and you probably will come to the conclusion it was an improvement. But with only a 4 speed tranny you are likely to find it is still "lacking". I have a 125 YBR. It is geared great or the highway, it cruises easily at 80 KPH, and will take us to 100 riding double when it needs to. However it is near worthless when it gets into serious off roading, which we used to do with the XRM. It is a 5 speed, if it had one more gear chances are it would be quite suitable for both. Now I could gear it down using a smaller front sprocket (which is very easy to change), but at the expense of my top end and/or having to switch sprockets when we decide we want to head up a trail. If I had the option of adding that one more gear that is what I would be doing. It is quite a task to convert to the 6 speed on the TMX.
ILoveCyrus 1,126
TMX has 4 speeds...why bump to 6 speed and not 5?
