Popular Post udonthani 2,027
I hadn't realised until now that there was Christian Fundamentalist terrorism problem in the Philippines. I thought until now, that it was only Muslims. they struck shortly after dinner while we were inside the house. Somehow they penetrated the compound and before you knew it there were hordes of them right outside the door, a disorganised, voluble rabble, carrying big sticks, banging drums, shouting, and singing Christmas carols really badly. most of them were quite young, around the ages of 10-12, but quite a few were older than that, and the ringleaders appeared to be adults. Through the curtains they appeared exited, expectant, and menacing. We had switched off the lights and were cowering behind the sofa, but they still appeared to think we were in there.. mercifully after a sustained onslaught of about 15 minutes, they retreated but I felt sorry for the inhabitants of the neighboring compound because all the terrorists had done was retreat, regroup, and concentrate their forces against them, instead of us. They were clearly a softer target, as the terrorist battalion were there for less than five minutes. I saw a white flag raised from one of the houses, and a cry of 'we surrender!' in French accented English, followed by the sound of a large number of coins hitting the floor. after they had gone I dressed in black to escape detection just in case they had smaller guerrilla hit squads roaming the area and crept round to the barangay captain's house by a circuitous route, through the mangrove. He took my fears seriously and guaranteed protection. He said if I paid him 2,000, he would see to it that our compound would not be disturbed again. do you think I can claim this back on my travel insurance?

jtmwatchbiz 31,460
God forbid that you give them 20 pesos for their efforts.... i tell ya what...providing you live in a gated home like whippy described, go ahead and hand the kiddie carolers some money and see what happens next. i guarantee you won't be getting any peaceful rest and relaxation as the adult carolers (beggars) will be there in droves within the hour and every hour until you finally loose your cool and threaten to let the guard dog loose. if you really want to give the kids a treat, do like we do and simply give them a few coins or candy treats outside the grocery store and wherever you see them hanging out...but don't do it where you live. I'm sorry if you don't have a little extra budget during the holidays to spread some Christmas cheer but I will think of you while I'm wasting some of my pesos on my neighbors. Haha.. Right... It's never been nor will it ever be a problem with me. If you choose to not help your fellow neighbors during the Holidays then that is your business. I don't mind it at all. You guys need to lighten up a little bit.... It's Christmas

Cannonball 260
It's Christmas Guys and even though we don't see ourselves a rich we have allot more than the average Filipino does... During the course of the Christmas season our family tosses a couple thousand or more P5 coins over the balcony to the folks below... They are never roudy or rude and it's all in fun and freely given... One year when we were on really hard times and couldn't afford it we only tossed a few 1 piso coins... Nobody got angry or rude and the next day several folks stopped by with small gifts of food... I was taken back to put it mildly... The moral of the story here (for me) is there are allot of good Filipinos with hearts just as big as mine here, and I am proud to live among them... I live in a Filipino Subdivision and the few foriegners that move in here don't stay long. Merry Christmas!
