new monitor ?

for a couple of weeks now my monitor has been a bit dark when first switched on or left not working for oa while, but last night it went black i switched it off then on and it was ok for a few seconds then went dark again. this moning it was fine for a while then after i tried to ajust the volume it went again.when i use the scroll i can just make out the shapes but not enough to read anything do i need a new monitor this is about 5 year old

Sounds like the backlight has gone. You may be able to get it fixed.

Five years old?

Is it a flat screen or a CRT?

 

If it's a CRT just throw it out.

thanks everybody i thought they were expensive but just phoned a computer shop who do them for £10 i'll be there in the morning

At ten quid I guess we can assume it's a CRT.

Here in Australia you can't give CRT monitors away free.
