Android is an operating system, mostly used on mobile phones and tablets.

Droid is a series of phones available from Verizon Wireless.

While all of the “Droid” phones run the Android OS, not all Android OS devices are “Droids”. :)

I can say that 100% I am satisfied with my Android 3.2 Gingerbread.   Now let me say this. I went and tried all the cheapo Chinese Versions of tablets. They are junk.... If you sit a Samsung or

I am currently State side so that wasnt an issue. Getting it back during the flight is a snap. I once brought back 4 laptops, 2 24" lcds, 2 guitars, amps and other and they waved me through no problem.

However, I sent a PC from USA to Cebu via Fedex, and they did slap a custom fee on it, 10% of declared value. I think it would be 12% now.

Experienced

This is a huge weakness of both iOS and Droid.

I think you could argue that tablets and smartphones are inherently personal devices, and while you might have people sharing them for awhile as they gain penetration, eventually it will be like sharing your laptop. Everyone is going to want their own, and the experience created on the above platforms reflects that. When you create a multi-user device people need to remember to log in and out to gain any of the benefits... I think you'll find that most people just won't bother to do that (even under Windows) for a device you're not booting up cold and logging into.

I've heard the argument that everyone will want their own, but I disagree. While that may be true with phones, high end tablets that cost nearly $1k USD are shared with family members. With Windows 8 and a "windows live signin" your settings and certain other content is available on any device you sign into. This is huge, because even if my wife and I have our own tablets, there are times were it would be easier to reach over to hers and do something than to go get mine.

Thankfully, Windows 8 fast user switching lets you switch between users without having to logoff or stop apps. Also, i find most people that have tablets wind up putting a lock code on them so that if someone they dont want starts to mess with their device, they dont see the naked pictures they took the night before. So, they still "login" to use the device and keep logging in as they let the timeout happen. Maybe its just guys at work I see doing it. They dont want to leave their tablet on their desk and then have someone else touch it for "fun".

I use my Samsung 10.1 android daily and my windows 8 tablet daily and can say that the windows 8 multi user function is more fluid than the lockout signin of the Android. Windows 8 lets you use a picture for your signin rather than type a number you swipe the image with a pattern, like say a circle around someone's face.

Dont think you'd use the android password on your tablet? Do you have a 5 year old? You will then... If I put tablet down for even 30 seconds, my kids will be on it. I use password screen to control access. As it is the kids are saying "can I use the tablet" throughout the day. I dont think I'll be buying a 5 year ol their own tablet, but when I do let them use it, I dont want them accidently replying to an email with a web cam pic of them picking their nose. Believe me, give a 5 year old free reign on your tablet for 30 minutes and you'll regret it.

My Fujitsu T901 (INTEL CORE i7-2640M, BLU-RAY, 8Gb RAM, 256GB SSD, 13.3’) should be the "high end" tablet at about US$3,900... :D

If you have not seen it, it is avialable in the US only... In fact, Fujitsu tablets were called "iPads" unitl Apple bought the trade name from them a few years back... :D

My “low end” Fujitsu tablet is a dud even though I paid nearly $600… Its Atom Z760 processor just does not want to work hard enough to open anything in timely manner…

I may want to get rid of it by tossing out from 40,000 ft over Johnston Atoll… :D

Most people today don't consider the pen based tablets like the Fujitsu and Motion Computing when they talk about tablets today. I had the Toshiba m200 and m400 in the past, which are great pen based tablets, but the experience is completely different from the tablets being discussed in this thread.

I do think that Windows 8 will allow for lots of possibilities and have seen some tablets that can switch between touch interface and pen based.

My 10" Chinese pad has a HDMI port and I can tell you, when plugged into my 32" HD tv it's a useful system.

I can surf the net, watch a HD movie or write and send an email, all sitting back in an arm chair.

The same pad entertains me on those dreadfully long KL stop overs and lets me listen to MP3 books as I fall asleep in a strange hotel.

Not bad for $200.

There seems to be a lot more of Tablets with Android 4 (ICS - Ice Cream Sandwich) coming out from China now.

Some of these have IPS Screens, they are Capacitive Multi-Touch and some offer higher Screen Resolutions (1024 x 600, and even 1024 x 768 on one)

Not many with Bluetooth built in however?

This will probably lower the cost of those Tablets with Android 2.x that cant be upgraded.

For me, one of the important applications was SKYPE Video Calling and this needs i) Front facing VideoCam, ii) Android 2.3 or higher.

Here are some of these NEW Android4 ICS Tablets from ChinaGrabber that are under 10" Size and can be had with Free Shipping for under $200 :-

Fry's Electronics in Seattle sells a 7" android for $90.

A friend bought a new Android on ebay direct ship from Hong Kong for $50, but the performance was so subpar you cant really surf the web that well.

People may think that web surfing means very little CPU - LOL. Sites like yahoo mail need serious CPU to work well. There are some cutting edge web apps that need serious CPU to work well. Try using http://www.newzealand.com with a slow tablet.
