Mindanao: We dare not travel there!

I looked up The Abu Sayyaf in Wikapedia. According to that source their heaquarters and principal area of operation is Jolo in the island province of Sulu. I don't know how close that is to Davao (which I've read is a clean and peaceful city) but I'm sure I don't want to go there. I'm also sure I don't want to go to Oakland but that doesn't mean I want to leave California. Oakland is about 300 miles from where I live.

you can live in compton california for years and never have a problem or you can get shot the first day no place is safe all the time... its like gambling the closer to the bad area you get the higer the odds are you will have a bad day... but like gambling no one knows for sure... i would think living in davao is like already having 3 aces almost a sure thing

I am referring to a post I just made in the Australian National Kidnapped thread.   After traveling there EXTENSIVELY and fairly OFTEN over the years, I still don't get this mess about how "unsafe"

Perhaps a tee-shirt needs to be made for Expats living or visiting in South Mindanao, and in huge letters and several local dialects write.   ******"Kidnappers BEWARE"****** Too poor to be worth ki

I do not want to change this into another thread about safety in Davao, but i would like to just say that Davao in the past was a somewhat lawless and dangerous place to be, and that corrective measu

i was in Sabah Borneo in July and really liked it - it was cleaner and more orderly than most of the phils i have seen - from what i saw i think safer

I don't know anybody who thinks that ALL of Mindanao is unsafe. I want to travel to Davao, Surigao, Butuan and CDO. Iligan City, Dipolog and General Santos City are frontier towns, and therefore questionable. Travelling to Cotabato, Pagadian, or Zamboanga (or any area near those towns) is, in my opinion, just too much risk. My views on living on Mindanao would be the same (although I have no intention of making that move). Kidnappers may carefully target somebody (which means that your risk goes up the longer you are there), or they may just strike a target of opportunity (which means it doesn't matter whether you are a long-term resident or just passing through).

One more thing...anybody who doesn't think the risks go up proportionately to the percentage of Muslims in an area is just fooling themselves. With Muslims, there is a tipping point when they think they can control things where it becomes exponentially more dangerous for Westerners. Once they reach the point where they have a major influence on local law enforcement, then you shouldn't expect any help from the authorities (not that you can expect that much help no matter where you are in the Philippines).

When choosing places to visit or live, one should honestly weigh the risks. If you are married with children, the consequences for making bad decisions go up dramatically. I wouldn't tell anybody that they CAN'T go someplace, but that doesn't mean I will follow them if they successfully visit a locale that is considered risky (due to its history). So...to those who have no problem visiting or living in areas of Mindanao that I consider risky...I say good luck. I wish you safe travels. See you when you get back...if you do.

well each one of them 4 wives cost money so where do you think they can get big money fast... a foreigner ,,, they used to raid the catholic area around harvest time but them silly catholic started fighting back now the foreigners.. easy as a marshmellow

That is untrue.

If your theory is only to likely hood of being killed for being stupid. Then maybe otherwise false. You are adding in non-violent death to prove a point when this is a violent way to die.

There have been 9 abductions of foreign nationals in that region of the country. That is in the last 6 months. So double that and that would 18 a year. Of that 6 died and one died later.

Homicide rate in New York City this year 2011, was 211. There are 8 million people in New York City.

To equal that rate you would have to have 127 thousand expats living in Mindanao. To equal the homicide rate of New York. So you are safer in New York City. Unless 127 thousand expats reside in Mindanao. Using the 12 as death rate.

Yet apples and oranges.

Again people comparing to the US when you can not do that.

But then you compare apples and oranges when you compare the homicide rate for a region (Mindanao) to a city (NYC) to come up with some off the wall death rate for expats in Mindanao? Cities will usually have a higher homicide rate than regions, so when you apply NYC's homicide rate to all of Mindanao, you come up with some ludicrous numbers. If you want to make a comparison, compare NYC against Davao or CDO, etc.

Then you attempt to compare killings of foreign nationals in Mindanao, with the homicide rate in NYC for everyone not just natiionals. Best way to try to make a comparison is to look at deaths of foreigners in NYC and deaths of foreigners in Davao. Or total homicides in NYC compared to total homicides in Davao.

And if you do that, what would the numbers suggest?

Well if someone is looking to live on the wild side and go to the way south i know how and where you can hire some off duty armalight carrying military ... my wife has a brother down there for over 25 years and he is now a commander and when she goes down there to visit family she gets an escort.. .. so if you want to ride on the way wild side take a few automatic weapon body guards..

Mindanao is roughly the same size as Indiana. Saying that all of Mindanao is unsafe is like saying beware of going to South Bend or Kalamazoo because there are bandits operating in the Hoosier National Forest in the south end of the state. The area around Cagayan de Oro, for example, is perfectly safe, or at least no more dangerous than Cebu and environs.

I am a consultant to a few mines in Agusan Del Sur, and have had to hold off on a few projects because of safety concerns in the region ( rogue militia groups apparently ). Unfortunately, if I dont go, I dont get paid !!

Attached are pics of some of the 'better' things that Mindanao boasts -

Pic 1 is at the bottom of a mine shaft at the PhilSaga Mine in Agusan Del Sur

Pic 2 is some really handsome Aussie gent at the peoples park in Davao

Pic 3 is Mount Apo from Davao's equivalent of Cebu's 'Tops'

Pic 4 is Davao City and harbour area ( with Samal island in the background ) from Davao's 'Tops'

Just to make clear for others, commonly referred to as rogue NPA rebels, no Muslim or Abu Sayaff rebels in that area of Mindanao..

For what its worth;

I have no hesitation visiting most areas of Mindanao but, i have no reason or desire to venture into the South West of Mindanao which includes ARMM or the Zamboanga Peninsula.

the sad fact is, is that no matter what's going on there, I feel like Iligan City is my second home. I just hope it stays safe enough for my son to meet my wifes family. I love it there :itsokay:
