I have friends that swear by TCM but they all have a practitioner they trust that either dispenses or has their friend dispense. My problem is when you go into the stores you need to buy what looks like the horn of an old billy goat and then ya gotta grind it down before taking.

I know the horrible black seaweed looking stuff blows out a headcold in a matter of hours (it really tastes like shit) but i have no further personal experience.

I understand the Chinese penis enlargement herbs are called "One Hung Loe" give em a try if you want

I'd say its a crap shoot. I assume your talking about Chinese pharmaceutical products and not traditional Chinese medicinal products.

But for an external skin product, I've used fluocinonide cream for occasional rashes or insect bites. It's a corticosteroid and should be used conservatively. It's much cheaper than buying a corticosteroid cream from the pharmacy. Small tubes easily go for several hundred pesos at the pharmacy. The Chinese version runs under 20 pesos for a large tube. You see them sold all over the place (even street vendors) in a small light green box.

I don't knowingly use any other pharmaceutical product from China and don't really desire to - until China cleans itself up a bit with quality control standards.

I personally couldnt recomend TCM highly enough IF you are able to locate a good practioner and that is the difficult thing. For a skin condition a TCM practioner would most likely not give you something topical to put on the skin but rather a mix of various herbs that you would boil for a time and drink the remaining liquid which in my experience tastes as foul as anythining you will ever encounter in your life. You would be told that the skin condition is due to an imbalance to your system which needs to be rectified and would generally take some time,TCM is preventative medicine,a completely different approach to western medicine where you go when you are sick and they give you a MAGIC pill.Buying something off the shelf would probably be a waste of money and you may also waste a lot of money finding a good TCM practioner but if you do manage to find a good one hang on to him or her because in my experience tthey are worth their weight in gold.

If you are referring to "Western pharmaceuticals" from China -?? Then NO --- avoid like the pox.

If you are talking about TCM from a Chinese physician then the game changes quite considerably.

GingSing and the like, acupuncture Etc., do work wonders in my experience having had treatment in S'Pore and S'Hai over 5 years which took me from a wheelchair to, now, perambulating unaided reasonably well.

but Rhino horn and Lion penis ground down and such ???? are NOT for me.

Those who understand that getting medicines dispensed from a TCM practitioner is the most reliable way to ensure "genuine parts" are correct. Over the years I and many others have had excellent results from these sources. They have known what they are doing far, far longer than any western form of medicine -in terms of traditional illnesses and ailments. Buying something from just any pharmacy however, offers no assurance that the product is genuine and pure.

In Manila there is (although I have not been there in 6 years) a big TCM medical centre on Ortigas Ave near San Mig and Mega Mall. Beijing trained Doctors in residence, training Filipino practitioners and treating patients for reasonable fees. The same facility exists in Vancouver on West Broadway.

I'd really like to find a TCM practitioner here in Davao, but no luck so far...

I recommwnsyou try the Cebu Asia Chinese Drug Store, 21-23 Plaridel Street, Talk to the guy that owns/manages the store. Most foreigners go there for chinese/viaghra type stuff but they have an immense stock of chinese herbs and potions.

I doubt he is a doctor but I think one could rely on his advice for uses of chinese products.

He strikes me as most likely a fairly honest man who seems interested in repeat business.

Wow, we are heading into a bid bad TCM argument here!

A couple of things for me that come to mind

  1. Western medicine & TCM herbs do N O T mix well. You milage would have been lessened if you had any biotransformation causing western medicine still in your system.
  2. Agreed the TCM clinical trials are nothing like western standards of proving safety, tolerability and efficacy - so the individual results really may be up or down. Least of all the practitioner has a variable level of input
  3. If you are still not satisfied with your health then keep fighting on...try more things or retry interventions...you owe it to yourself

Good luck

I doubt it. The arguments have been done to death, and the poster specifically asked if the TCM available here was legitimate here or not, so he's already made up his mind.

I'm sure there would be a market considering the large amount of people with Chinese ancestry. Might be worth hanging out at the Taoist temple and asking the guys there?

Most people are already using Chinese medicine and don't even realize it.

Yes, many of the pharmaceuticals and ingredients used are from other countries... including China! Shame on you bigPharma!!

Here's the story:

http://www.alternet.org/story/153713/do_you_know_where_your_medicine_came_from_over_40_of_pills_made_overseas_--_many_in_unregulated_factories

Fact: 80 percent of U.S. pharmaceuticals made with overseas ingredients, nearly half produced in foreign facilities never inspected by FDA.

Fish Sandwich

I remember seeing a news report a couple years back that stated some of the ingredients in chinese pharmaceuticals was the equivalent of eating road paint and drywall (sheetrock), especially when it came to popular drugs like viagra.
