let me break it down for you .... guy was a missionary finds a street kid 20 years go by now the street kid ( trusted Aid) has a child of his own... thinks he is owed money for helping this so called friend and when he dont get what he feels is the right amount he shots him and buries him you know kind of like throwing out the trash ... Oh brings the old saying to mind... In God we trust all others pay cash...

Sorry Robert but the question (for me) is WHY would a CANADIAN, take a gun to have a drink with a TRUSTED aide. As usual MUCH more to this story than some members here may like to agree to.

BTW, not siding with either of them Expat or Pinoy. Just not all as it seems as usual.

Ok, I have been on a self imposed hiatus, but could not help posting, just this once!

1. Why would anyone believe a freaking thing they read in the paper here? Poorly written, facts most likely distorted, hearsay regurgitated.

2. Who ever said the Canadian was carrying a gun? Why do people jump to conclusions? They were at the Canadian's rest home, most likely the gun was stored there as it's on the very edge of civilization. Refer to bad reporting!

3.

Before he was killed, Rentenberg reportedly went to sitio Sapa to have a drinking session with Aburot.
Alcohol Must be a catholic missionary! LOL It's also a good thing Rentenburg went to the rest house to drink before he was killed.

4.

But Rentenberg shouted at Aburot in Cebuano, “di ko bayad sa balay, wala ko dinhi.”
IF the reporting is accurate, yelling at a drunk Filipino is not very smart. Especially if he knows where your gun is!!!

5. Smokey be careful, tag team will be after you! Wanna be my partner? LOLOL Cheers

Now back to my hiatus!

We don't really know it was the Canadian's gun, do we? Just because the suspect said so?

Bob,

How did his gun get to where they were drinking if he didn't carry it there? Also where does it say he was at a rest home? The report say - "Before he was killed, Rentenberg reportedly went to sitio Sapa to have a drinking session with Aburot.

In an interview, Aburot told The FREEMAN that while they were drinking at 11 p.m. on June 26, he asked Rentenberg to pay him for his work in constructing the Canadian’s small rest house for 14 days." - refer to bad reading :)

Show me your friends and I'll show you your future. Sad to say it, but the more people you let into your life over here, as a foreigner, the more danger you have the potential to put yourself in. Be careful who you drink with.

My feelings too. "Free press" takes on a new meaning here.

as in " free to make it up as you go along without any thought given to jouralistic integrity"

As in free to exaggerate in any way that will sensationalize things and sell more newspapers?

Perhaps a slightly more reputable report:

Three arrested in connection with murder of Canadian in Philippines

Three Filipinos have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Canadian who was living in the Philippines.

Foreign Affairs Canada on Friday confirmed it was aware of the death of Darcy Hanz Reutenberg, 53, who had been living in Cebu City.

“Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is aware of reports concerning the presumed death of a Canadian citizen in the Philippines,” DFAIT spokesman Jean-Francois Lacelle wrote in an email. “The Canadian Embassy in Manila is in contact with the local police authorities to gather additional information.”

In late June, Mr. Reutenberg’s decomposing remains were found buried beneath a cement floor in a pig pen about 60 metres from the suspected killer’s house in Cebu City.

Rolando Aburot, 46, was arrested Friday. His wife and 17-year-old son were also arrested for being aware of the murder and not alerting authorities.

Mr. Reutenberg was last seen alive by his landlord, who saw him leave his home on a motorcycle on June 25, local police confirmed. It was the landlord who noticed his absence and filed a missing persons report with police.

Richie Camallo, a police officer in Cebu City, said Mr. Reutenberg’s disappearance became suspicious when the Canadian’s neighbours found blood in his home.

Mr. Aburot and his property became of interest to the investigation when police learned he had stolen the Canadian’s laptop and given it to his wife, who then sold it to a used electronics dealer in Cebu City. A local paper reported that 50,000 Philippines pesos had also been stolen from Mr. Reutenberg. Although Officer Camallo was unable to confirm that any money had been stolen, he explained that police surveillance of Mr. Aburot’s property revealed that he purchased several new farm animals soon after Mr. Reutenberg’s disappearance.

When police visited Mr. Aburot’s property, they found a recently cemented floor in his pig pen. Police dug it up and found Mr. Reutenberg’s remains underneath.

A Cebu City newspaper interviewed Mr. Aburot and reported that he claims he had been drinking with Mr. Reutenberg before his death. Mr. Aburot told the newspaper an altercation took place after Mr. Reutenberg allegedly refused to pay Mr. Aburot for his services in constructing the Canadian’s home. Mr. Aburot claims the man pulled out a gun that he had to wrest it from Mr. Reutenberg’s hands before shooting him in the head.

The Cebu City Inquirer reported that an autopsy revealed Reutenberg was shot at close range.

Cebu City police believe robbery may have been the motive.

Aburot surrendered to police at a gas station in Cebu City. The investigation is ongoing and local police are seeking witnesses.

I think we are getting much closer to the truth with this report.

I've heard in the past that "trusted aide" can mean bodyguard and if so the aide might have had it on his person.

Exactly.

How the hell did the blood get from Aburot's house to Rentenberg's house?
