A police captain, a former Army soldier and their civilian companion were arrested last week for the kidnapping of a Pakistani businessman last May 24.

Agents of the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response (PACER) rescued unharmed the kidnap victim, whose identity was withheld for security reasons.

Philippine National Police chief Director General Oscar Calderon said the arrest of the suspects and successful rescue of the kidnap victim prove that there is an intensified campaign to neutralize kidnap-for-ransom syndicates, especially criminals from the police and military.

The suspects were identified as Senior Inspector Eleazar Sieton, assigned with Central Mindanao and now on absence without official leave (AWOL) status; Jonathan Melgo, a former Army soldier, residing at the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) housing project in Taguig City; and Amad Tallib Hasan, alias Ahmad Talib Guiamad, a vendor of Novaliches, Quezon City.

Police said charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention were filed at the Department of Justice.

Absolutely disgusting. In many third world countries military and police are the worst criminals.

As the saying goes, "power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely".

To be fair there are many policemen who choose the high road. I'm glad my future FIL is one of them. He is with the PNP and lives very frugally compared to his counterparts in the other police agencies!
