You are studying Tagalog. I can help you more with Cebuano.

Hello, this may be a bit OT but it is not often that I meet a Tagalog/Cebuano/English teacher, so I would like to ask you (or anyone on the forum) a question, if I may

Hi miles-high! I don't teach Filipino or Tagalog. I just know the language because it's the official language in the Philippines and it's really taught at school. However, I am really teaching Cebuano to expats here and English to Asian students. I teach both ESL and IELTS.

Anyway, Yes, it's right. The people in Luzon or the Tagalogs call it kilawin and the Visayans call it kinilaw.

hmm.. Kilawin is a dish name and we refer to it in Tagalog as it is. It doesn't matter as to what the main ingredient is.. be it fish or vegetable. they're all going to be called kilawin.

But kinilaw or kilaw is also understood to refer and mean kilawin.

ikilaw - to prepare the dish

ikinilaw/kinilaw - the dish had been done and prepared

kilawin(g)..(name of the main ingredient).
