.. I certainly wouldn't be going on a crusade telling my hosts how to run their country and that they had to change their laws...

I thought it was already possible to get a permit in the PI?

When all of the criminals in the world throw their guns into the sea then I believe we should too. It's that simple. If a man is afraid of a gun, maybe you should check to see what is between his legs

Yes, violence is a societal issue not an object ownership issue. Interestingly if one looks at crime stats for Caucasian Americans they are very close to the figures in Western Europe. Draw your own c

The "designed for" argument is a red herring. Volkswagon made a lot of military vehicles. So have Jeep. GM. In other pointless bits of data, my guns have never come close to killing anyone. "Designed

If I was a guest living in another country and I was living a life of fear, scared shitless that someone may come and rob me I would get my arse out of there at the earliest possible time... I certainly wouldn't be going on a crusade telling my hosts how to run their country and that they had to change their laws... could you imagine a foreigner in the USA campaigning to ban guns because he's scared he might get shot ??? I think I know what he would be told...

I said the same thing on another thread recently. I would not consider owning a gun in the Philippines, and if I felt that threatened, then I would find another country. Plenty to choose from...

If foreigners were allowed to purchase guns, then the prices would come down.

.....I don't consider the 15% of salary that disappears each month to pay my pension as "tax" That's shocking, I had no idea. In Oz, it is mandated that employers must pay 9% (some are pushing for 12%) of the before tax wage of the individual into a "superannuation" fund... it's additional to the wage, not paid by the wage earner.

.....I was speaking of UK/EU/AU guys who are so adamantly anti-gun......

Please note that the majority of rank-and-file Aussies are not anti gun, it is the legislators who pander to the special interest minority groups who are "adamantly anti-gun". As our American friends will confirm, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns", and that is the case in Australia... since the Tasmanian massacre (35 dead) precipitated blanket bans, more firearms have come into Australia illegally than ever in history. Clowns and jokers left and right of me, all running around with (unregistered) 9 mils and .45's packing up to 14 rounds in the butt magazine. The media here does an excellent job of calming the helpless hordes, so they perceive this place to be safe... HAH!!! The Philippines is a far safer place than Melbourne or Sydney.

Geriatric expat commandos, LOL.

The odds of being killed in a school shooting are less than being struck by lightening. Again, where is that damn eyeroll thingie? Probably the most dangerous thing Americans do is to drive to work, but no one seems interested in raising driver license fees and making the tests and standards for driving much more stringent.

Irrational fear for the win ....

I tried to say this in another thread and was howled down... driving (along with eating foods shown to promote cancer) is the most dangerous activity humans undertake, and yet we constantly have newbies (who presumably drive a car at home, and know at least one person who was killed/maimed whilst driving) asking "Is it safe to..... in the Philippines" (fill in the blanks)

"Irrational fear for the win..." thanks Locktite.

amazing spin... somehow the issue of gun ownership has been placed in the same sentence as driver licensing fees.. yep thats it

Makes a lot of sense to me, since we're talking broadly about safety and instruments of death.

This poll is not only dumb, it's seditious, promoting arguments about a very emotional subject matter whose name alone instils fear in many... "gun, rifle, pistol"... these words can start a fight amongst friends just by raising the subject.

I reiterate: if you are so scared of the Philippines that you feel the need to carry a gun, then go, leave it to those who are comfortable with their life choices. My body will make equally good fertiliser in the Philippines as it will in Oz.

Whilst I agree with much of what you've said I can't agree with the view that a gun & a motor vehicle should be placed in the same basket as instruments of death, the reason being that a gun is designed as an instrument of death and a motor vehicle is designed to transport people from A to B.

Perhaps you were thinking along the lines of this....... madmax.jpg

Then we must agree to disagree my friend. You've lived in Oz, so you must know that many people here use cars as weapons... "Instruments of death"... as a biker, I understand this all too well.

A designer's intended use and actual usage are quite often incongruous... just look at the multitude of farm implements used in Chinese martial arts. And what of motor racing?

To take the concept further, what was the first ever gun intended for? To kill an enemy, or to kill a food source?

The "designed for" argument is a red herring. Volkswagon made a lot of military vehicles. So have Jeep. GM. In other pointless bits of data, my guns have never come close to killing anyone. "Designed for" is nonsense, it makes no difference what something was designed to do, not to mention that is up to interpretation. Firearms are designed to propel a projectile accurately, reliably, and safely. That's it. To imagine more is to instill intent into an inanimate object.

The fact that cars kill more Americans than guns every year should drive that home. The core reason given by people who are anti-gun is always safety, after all, but simple facts such as rationally looking at real risk factors gives the lie to this. What they are really about is banning objects they have been trained to fear.

Off topic but my doctor told me that Viagra was "Designed for" use as a heart treatment of some kind so . . you're absolutely right on that it makes no difference what something was designed to do. It matters how its used.

Here we go again, round and round in circles....guns don't kill people, people kill people....blah, blah, blah....

All I can say is if all these people who do the killing of other people didn't happen to have a gun in their hand at the time then there'd be a lot more innocent people walking around on this planet of ours... obviously I'm not gonna change anybodies views on here, just as you're not going to change mine...

Minoxidil was a high blood pressure medication .. i'm sure there are tons of things not being used for their original designed for use if we all wanted to sit here and make lists

and actually it would be quite interesting

the problem with the gun argument and many arguments is that both sides feel superior to the other and it ceases to be a debate on the merits or disadvantages of both sides but more an veiled argument of i'm better than you because

To summarise my veiled argument, I am pro gun at home, but anti gun for foreigners in the Philippines.

Having said that, it would be nice to be able to go along somewhere and shoot some clay targets -- down-the-line, trap, or skeet -- then hand the shotgun back to the attendant and go home.

All I can say is if all these people who do the killing of other people didn't happen to have a gun in their hand at the time

Then next we start banning knives as UK has already started to do. Then whats next? Banning rocks? No glass bottles? Chop everyones hands off so they cant use their hands as a deadly instrument? It's asinine.

Speaking of which, I wonder how many people get murder via beating vs murdered via gun in any respective country. If someone is going to kill me I would much rather be shot than beaten to death.

Exactly!!

Have only had to pick up a gun twice in my life in self defense... both times to protect myself from a road-raging asshole.

Nothing like seeing a skinny geekcool_01.gif sighting a Beretta 92F on you as you approach his vehicle to make a snarling muscle-head taz.gifreconsider his intentions.

What exactly is the plan before I vote ?

To come up with legislation that would allow permanent residence to legally own firearms.

Before I vote.

How exactly are you going to do that ?
