How safe and secure do you feel?

Not too burst anyone's bubble...

Scaredy Cats shouldn't move to the Philippines, nor any other third world country. meow...

On a serious note...Philippines is as safe as you make it. You start walking around near the squatter areas in the middle of the night, you are 50% more likely to get held up. Then, if you start utilizing alternative methods of circumventing typical municipal or goverment processes you are bound to be placed in an awkward situation.

Do everything legally, associate with the right people and be aware of your surroundings and you can be part of the hundreds of thousands of other foreiners that reside here safely.

Good advice I think...I walked around Manila all over the place at night, many times, I didn't have any problems, although probably not the wisest thing to do, had my gf with me and we stayed out in many areas good and not so good...interesting, very interesting!!

Lets be real people. Cebu is a large city with large city problems. The justice system is not going to protect you. The system here does not work in your favor. So are you safe? You are the envy of every poor Filipino. They want what you have. However if you attack life like that you will make your life safer.

LET'S GET REAL???

EASIER SAID THEN DONE...READ THE LATEST POST REGARDING CRIME!!

Ronald, the RP is very safe for seasoned travelers and expats, but if you're that worried about crime there, then you probably shouldn't go (or have you been?). Spend your money on a trip somewhere that you'll have peace of mind.

Willie...Thanks for your input.....I've been there in the Philippines 4 times in the last 12 months, and Costa Rica, Colombia, and a few others several times....I am not worried about the crime so much, I think I can handle myself quite well, more like the shaky flaky government et el....know what I mean. I see you have been there 9 times and do you live there now?

Oh good, I misunderstood your post. You're an old pro then. Hell I haven't been there in nearly 20 years. Seriously considering spending a lot of time there before long if the country stays so affordable, which it most likely will. Our problem long term will be the strength of the dollar. Hope we don't end up in the poor house even in places like the Philippines. I'm not too worried about the government there, just don't plan to take more than I can afford to lose, which is not much. :highfive: Hope to see you there. BTW, you seen Fanboat in LA?

No worries mate!

How do you feel in So Cal? Nothing bad happens there, right?

how do you compare California to cebu oh because they both start with a C.... ?? Sorry .... the most important safty factor is when you dial 911 someone shows up at your house well here that is a dream unless your the mayor or someone with a special phone number to call... no i am kidding you will be very safe here just dont drink, loan money , wander the streets at night , dont use hookers , dont dress nice , dont wear jewlery , dont ride jeepneys , dont yell ,scream, or insult anyone with brown skin and or dark hair and you will be snug as a bug in a rug... Now if you plan on breaking any of these rules get your wife to get a carry permit and pack a 45 and a few spare clips

I hate to shatter your bad dream about life here, but there are cities in the Philippines that do have full 911 services (fire/police/ambulance/paramedic). One such is Davao.

Mark

mark first i would say you have never called for the police ??? the number is 166 NOT 911 ... Davao is one city and a different city then many others ,,,,, just like Chicago is one city in the US and London is one city .... 166 sucks as does the equipment the fire dept. has and the pay of the firemen . and the pay of the police you get what you pay for...and you do know that the police , the fire and the ambulance all have different numbers and there is no paramedic...///// and as you love to point out to me often this is about CEBU not davao

Back in 2000, I just moved to Huntington beach and decided to take the Jaguar out to explore the area...I got lost in Compton for an hour. Was a cool trip...I ate some real down-home soul food (fried catfish and grits) near the Compton Airport and met a guy who let me fly his Hughes 300. I need to find the picture I have...I could barely fit in the thing...flew nice for a petrol engine.

I think most of the Philippines including Cebu is as safe as you make it. Big Rob said earlier is right, be smart with what you do and were you go. Don't draw unusual attention to yourself and treat people well and you will be treated well also. Many foreigners get in trouble in the Philippines because they do not treat people how they would want to be treated and make enemies. I have been to most of the Philippines and have never felt in real danger but I just obey these simple rules. 1. Treat other how I want to be treated. 2. Make as many friends as possible everywhere I go. 3. Obey the local laws and customs, and be smart with were you go and if you are alone be even smarter.

The Philippines is as safe as you make it for yourself!

we had a job to repaint with graffiti paints the high school in Compton, the first thing they did was have a locker inspection and found 6 hand guns and 11 knives and when we needed to use the CR we had to have a police / security escort so non of the workers would get mugged ... great place I lived in Dominguez hills which is really part of Compton ... once on 77th and Figaroa we were painting a bank of America and it was robbed while we were inside by 4 guys.... Always exciting to work there among our minority fellow citz...

if they were trying i didnt notice and didnt lose anything! thumbs_up.gif

i love the openess of the people there- almost anyone is happy to talk to you -

often you get asked? are you alone??? where are you going??? are you married???? the nursing students love to hear they can make 2.5 to 3 million pesos per year in the US! and the pharmacy students about piss their pants when you tell them they can start at 4.5 to 5 million pesos per year steve.gif

are you alone???

This is so they can determine how many of them will be needed to rob you.

where are you going???

To make sure they can push you off into an inconspicuous area to facilitate, the above.

are you married????

Maybe they want to rape you too?

the nursing students love to hear they can make 2.5 to 3 million pesos per year in the US!

...and with a little trip back to your place late one evening, you can provide the cute ones some pointers.

and the pharmacy students about piss their pants when you tell them they can start at 4.5 to 5 million pesos per year

Man...you should work for the recruiting deparment of a local Nursing University.

Done IT again Doyle...

A GREAT BIG Belly laugh from me in appreciation @ 03.25 in UK...Thank's Pal

If you are stupid it is a dangerous place. So are alot of cities for that matter. Petty crime is higher here then in most western countries. Individual attacks are higher. Major crime seems lower. Your chances of being attacked are higher. One reason you are a turd in a punch bowl.

The turd in punch bowl can apply anywhere. just be smart

Ask ol' Rod;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_King

Simply put people, the Philippines is as safe as you make it. If you're smart and prudent, you're as safe as anywhere else. If you're stupid and careless, or afraid of your own shadow, well,... maybe you should stay under the porch!

Alan S

Lets put it in perspective.

I spent most of 91-92 living and working in Angeles. since then I have visited many times (around 50 or so), staying for periods between 2 weeks and 8 or 9 weeks, living in everything from 5* hotels, to, well, the opposite extreme, and even in nipa huts.

I have travelled to places than many of the locals describe as dangerous, walked around alone at night, and broken most of the "rules".

And yet, I have never been attacked, or robbed, or had my pocket picked.

I havent had anything stolen, havent been the victim of a scam, or any other dubious practice.

(Did get in one fight though, but that was with a drunk American.)

That isnt because I am likely to be a physical threat to any possible attacker. Being elderly, overweight, and having had aa sedentary job, I wouldt appear to be a threat to anyone.

Yes, you do need to keep your eyes open and your wits about you and use some common sense, but given those, it is as safe as anywhere.

I find New York far more scary, and some parts of LA that I have seen (but not been stupid enough to walk around) are, in my opinion, most definately far more dangerous than the Philippines.

Alan I agree with you to a point. It is as safe as you make it. I would have felt safer in Iraq on a patrol then walking Mango Street at 3am. (Guns weapons body armor)

Though I have been robbed at gun point here. Outside of SM mall 2 years ago. Did the guards help did anyone help. Hell no. I am not flashy I nor did I really do anything to make myself a target. So do not think you are not a target. Your plane ticket here was 6+ times the average monthly salary of a typical Filipino. You are a target and keep that in mind. Is it safe. Yes I think overall it is safe. But crime is here just like every big city in the world. It is probably more here because poverty spreads to all sections of the city not to just one area of the city. Poor and uneducated people commit more crimes something the Philippines has an abundant number of.

I give things in general a 5 here in Cebu and environs...judge each circumstance on its own merit...at all times: pay attention, maintain low profile, be polite and as patient as can be (even when you wanna choke the living shit out of the ignorant fool that's trying said patience)

typical equipage for me when out & about: 2 pcs i.d., cell phone, police whistle, stun gun, minimal cash, and when not solo: asawa with carry permit and my Glock17 in "her" fanny pack which I always tote for her because I am such a gentleman
