usually I keep my wear shorts that have side pockes with velcro covers, so don't have to worry about getting pickpocketed.

Are they "cargo pants" style pockets? I met an American soldier at the airport once on his way back to Japan. He thought his wallet would be safe in the velcro side pocket of his cargo shorts, but somebody managed to slice the bottom of the pocket open with a razor or something without him noticing. He showed me the shorts and I was amazed that they were able to cut it all the way across the bottom of the pocket without him feeling it.

I have met people who first realised this when they feel the blood trickling down the leg... Is a common practice in quite a few places, Shanghai, Prague, London.

Let's not kid ourselves that the Philippines is the safest place; it certainly has its increased hazards for the naive westerner. It's just a case of adapting, altering your behaviour and finding the right balance for quality of life vs being streetwise and responsible.

As a parent, I worry more about my children when in the Philippines then I do when we are in England, but thats also partly because of us living in the middle of a large city. I'm also careful with my posessions, how I dress and how I behave to try and keep a nice low profile. This works fine for us, but it is a case of adapting.

On the other side, there are many many positives, and you just have to balance everything on the whole. If you really worry, it comes down to making a list of the pro's and con's.

I don't worry about my physical safety in the Philippines any more than I did in the US, but I do worry a lot more about property crimes and petty theft.

Snatchers and property crime are rampant here. My in-laws never leave their house unoccupied. They always make sure somebody is home so they don't get robbed. My stepson has lost 2 cellphones to snatchers in the past couple of months. Granted this is anecdotal evidence, but I think its a fairly common experience for most Filipinos.

how do you compare California to cebu oh because they both start with a C.... ?? Sorry .... the most important safty factor is when you dial 911 someone shows up at your house well here that is a dream unless your the mayor or someone with a special phone number to call... no i am kidding you will be very safe here just dont drink, loan money , wander the streets at night , dont use hookers , dont dress nice , dont wear jewlery , dont ride jeepneys , dont yell ,scream, or insult anyone with brown skin and or dark hair and you will be snug as a bug in a rug... Now if you plan on breaking any of these rules get your wife to get a carry permit and pack a 45 and a few spare clips

We do have 911 service for police, fire and ambulance here in Davao City, and they do respond! As a friend of mine found out a week ago or so. He was out in his yard firing his (wifes) .45 (in province) someone called 911, they responded........he won't be doing that again unless it's with his finger and hollering bang bang :biggrin_01: But all in all the neighbors feel safer now...hahaha. As for me and my safety, I really don't worry about it, besides after a bottle of Tanduay I become 10 foot tall and bulletproof. :D

I just got home from 40 days in Cebu

i lived in Talambam and worked in Banilad at an korean english academy

while i was there i rode jeepneys and habal habal all over the place, often at night. Went to the Carbon-Colon area numerous times. Now i didnt do stupid stuff. I didnt go walking down alleys in Colon at night or hang out drunk at bars at 3 am by myself, just used common sense. During all that time I never felt threatened. People were universially warm and friendly, always helpful if i had a question? How do i get to Asilo or the Metro Mall? They seemed anxious to help me. I felt at home and comfortable the whole time.

As long as you avoid the same stupid stuff there as in the US you should be fine.

I think you have to have a mindset that most people are basicallly good.

I hate to shatter your bad dream about life here, but there are cities in the Philippines that do have full 911 services (fire/police/ambulance/paramedic). One such is Davao.

Lets be real people. Cebu is a large city with large city problems. The justice system is not going to protect you. The system here does not work in your favor. So are you safe? You are the envy of every poor Filipino. They want what you have. However if you attack life like that you will make your life safer.

LET'S GET REAL???
