Starting and Internet Business in Cebu September 8th

Hi Everyone:

This is my second attempt at making a go of it with a business in the Phils. I will be doing allot of things differently this time and hope that lessons learned will help me.

My business is basically Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In short, I try and am mostly successful depending on the keywords wanted...getting websites on the 1st page of Google. Again, it depends on the keywords and the competition involved.

I need to hire a person who likes likes working with open source applications like Wordpress and Joomla. I have over 40 domains I need designed, developed and SEOd.

I will need about 5 experienced Copy Writers who are willing to learn SEO.

I will need on SEO expert with years of experience who can manage a team.

And 1 cook.

In addition to these people I will require a house and a few computers. I don't want to live in an expensive gated community. Living amongst Philippinos is ok with me. I do want a decent house where I can get high speed internet service. I would also like it furnished. The house will have a rooms in it turned into work places. ideally, a 3 or 4 bedroom house. 20,000 pesos should do.

I already have contracts for work and expect many more.

I am working on a tight budget because I am putting some of money away in case of an emergency.

Any advice or help you people is much appreciated.

I arrive in Cebu September 10th. I already have a few people lined up for work.

Also, if anyone knows of a clean Pension House with Wifi and Aircon for cheap I sure would like that info.

I am not looking for advice on how to run a business in Cebu and so on.

Thanks for looking at my post.

I can be reached at franko 4444 @ gmail dot com (fill in the spaces).

The problem is finding the quality people that you can employ here. The college grads for IT have zero knowledge of how to apply anything that is taught. Additionally the education level to which they are taught is very low.

I would consider myself a PC expert. This would include many versions of all software that run on the PC. The techs that I have hired with a college education fail a simple test that I have any techs take prior to hiring.

Some simple questions that I will ask:

What is HTTP?

What is TCP?

The difference between a static and dynamic IP?

What is front bus speed?

Why is a front bus speed important?

What is the difference between DDR and DDR2 ram?

Why is an PCI E graphics card better then AGP card?

Why is Windows vista a better operating system the windows XP as for performance?

They seem to miss these questions. They are college graduates. Yet they know what are the best things on the market yet do not comprehend why a Dual Core processor is better then a single core. They just know it is better.

So finding quality, knowledgeable, and understanding SEO and what the analytical of google and other search engine will be a feat. Additionally finding a SEO expert will be difficult. There are allot of little things that make it operate at its max proficiency. (hidden text, hidden links, lots of background noise) Additionally understanding how the engines look for data.

I wish you the best of luck however understand the daunting task you seek from the population here. The best and brightest leave the country for greener pastures.

I am actually considering starting a similar business there in the RP :D Maybe we should join forces :D I'll be there mid-October.

I actually started to work with one person there to get started, but the language barrier was too great to overcome. Your going to find the first thing you need is at least one person who is both technical and speaks FLUENT, not just passable english. I have decided to wait until I get there before bothering any further with it :D If you don't find someone who speaks great english and be taught some of these technical topics you're going to have a very hard time of it. For me it was like beating my head against a wall but I'm not a very patient person when it comes to teaching others. I agree with what was previously said -- the person I was working with is set to graduate with an IT degree in one month and had almost no idea what I was talking about to follow instructions properly.

Also, please let me know what you find as far as internet connection. I am dependent on that too and so far the best recommendations have been to get a primary and backup line so that when one goes out the other might work. It seems even with a solid DSL connection there, access to the net in the US is still fairly slow which may be a problem for me as well. I am looking forward to hearing your experience.

I'd take precautions with all those computers there and who you hire. It will make a tempting target for theft and people talk there.

Hello All:

I suppose I should have made myself a little clearer with my post. First the comment about IT graduates and their skill level is right on the money. Let me back up a bit. I had 10 people working with me in Dumaguete. None of them were good with the English language. As many of you know SEO is based on content. So, I had to edit all the content they wrote. Most of my day was dedicated this chore.

I had one IT graduate approach me for work. After coaxing here for around 15 minutes to tell me what her skills were she told me she knew Excel and Word. 4 years of University and her parents and relatives putting all those hard earned pesos into her education. She knew very little English to boot. I understand she washes clothes in her neighborhood to make a living. What did she do for 4 years???? Oh well, at least she go around telling everyone she is University graduate.

I had some of my 10 member team doing pretty good with SEO but had to dissolve the company and leave for Canada for a few months.

I just had a guy apply as an SEO expert. I asked him the difference between Page Rank and SERPS. He copied and pasted text from Wikipedia!

Anyway this time I am going hire experienced Content Writers and train them. Only one "expert SEO person"

Hey one guy put in his resume as one of his skills...."Internet Surfer." What the hell is that?

Another guy said he won contests in SEO and that he was a Super Star in SEO person. He couldn't find a good job because of his English skills. He told me he does SEO but outsources his content. I didn't hire him either especially when he asked for top dollar.

Well I will be in Cebu in a week and will give it a try. If it doesn't work I will be off for Bangalore, India. I don't have the time to fool around with this. I will give it 30 max to find the people I need.

Thanks everyone for your input,

Franco

Also I don't necessarily want fluent English speakers...I need persons who are fluent English speakers who can writer really well. A degree and a few years experience in journalism is a bonus or as a editor for a magazine etc. Most of my SEO consists of writing and it's useless for me to train people who are not excellent writers.

If you want I an critique your Apartment in Bogota website. I am guessing you are going for Apartments and Bogota as your keywords since they are in your meta title.

You should of used the plural in your domain as in ApartmentS The title does not contain the actual keyword but related or different words in a keyphrase are there. Preferably, the exact keyword should exist in the title. If the keyword consists of many words but these do not appear in the exact order, the full effect will not be achieved. Your website will have a better chance of getting good positions for the keyword if it appears exactly as it is in the title. For example Apartment Bogota

The title is longer than 64 characters.A title should be a maximum of 64 characters. If the title is too long, the relevance of the content of the web page will be spread over too many different keywords. Furthermore, there is a risk that the whole title will not be visible on the search result page. If you want since I have a subscription to Word Tracker I can research the best keywords and competition.. but it will take a few hours to a full complete keyword research based on the KEI analysis. Apartment Bogota | Colombia Rooms for Rent -Daily Weekly Monthly

The H1 does not contain the keyword.

The H1 is the main heading of the web page. Using the keyword in the H1 is consequently very important.

Your website has 31 indexed pages according to Google. This is not really many pages. Your website would benefit if you added a decent amount of new pages. You need to work on inbound links. Could be Black,White or Grey Hat. You need to work on submitting articles to other sites with using anchor text of the keywords you are tying to achieve top ranking for.

The text does not contain the keyword but all the parts exist.

If a keyword contains more than one word and all of these words appear individually in the text but not in order, the search engine's cannot provide an exact match. The page would rank higher for the word if it appears as you have written it. For example Apartment Bogota. This may have to do something with the way you made the Apartments Plural.

Your keyword is made up of more than one word and these words appear in the meta description, but not in the exact order as the keyword. The keyword should appear in the meta description exactly as is.If the keyword is made up of more than one word and these don't appear in the same order in the meta description, the full effect will not be achieved. Who the hell is Martha and her family and why should that matter. That is what will show up in the SERPs.

The meta keywords does not contain the keyword.

If the meta keywords of the page contains the keywords, it will give that keyword a little extra weight. This does not apply to Google as it does not care about meta keywords, but could help with Yahoo, Bing, Altavista and Ask.

When linking your site in your Signature from other sites with high PR ( LinC is only a PR 1 ), you should use the keywords as your anchor text: for example: Apartments Bogota Colombia and Accommodation Bogota Colombia

You have a long way to go to be able to develop a domain like bestofthebestseo... to be honest.. that is a crap domain is you want to be a respected SEO guru !
