“The link will start at Cebu South Coastal Road Tunnel, Cebu, and end at the Mactan Cebu Circumferential Road in Barangay Pilipog in Cordova town, Mactan Island.”

“The expressway bridge will serve as an alternative route between Cebu City and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, reducing the travel time by approximately 40 minutes.”

"The P30-billion toll bridge, which will be substantially completed by the end of 2021, will use an all-electronic toll collection system when it opens in the first quarter of 2022 to provide motorists safe and seamless travel."

It's called Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway.

Iconic Landmark

A major infrastructure project and soon to become part of Cebu’s iconic landmarks, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) will connect mainland Cebu from Cebu City to Cordova town in Mactan Island.

Project developer Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC), a subsidiary company of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), envisions CCLEX as not only decongesting traffic in the two existing bridges but also increasing economic activities in Cebu and throughout the Visayas Region.

To be operated as a toll expressway, the artistically designed 8.5-kilometer CCLEX will have two lanes in each direction and 51-meter navigational clearance for shipping traffic. With its design speed of 80 kilometers per hour, CCLEX is expected to serve at least 50,000 vehicles daily. It is scheduled for completion in 2021.

CCLEC will implement the construction and oversee the operation of CCLEX through a joint venture agreement with the City of Cebu and Municipality of Cordova.

THE VISION

A monumental project that makes use of the latest engineering feats, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) is visualized as becoming one of the tourist attractions in the Visayas region.

Project brief

Spanning 8.5 kilometers, CCLEX will link mainland Cebu in Cebu City to Mactan Island through the municipality of Cordova.

The artistically designed CCLEX will have two lanes in each direction and on and off ramps connecting the main bridge to the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) as well as a viaduct that levels down to a causeway in Cordova’s Barangay Pilipog.

With navigational clearance of 51 meters for shipping traffic and design speed of 80-90 kilometers per hour (kph), the toll expressway is expected to serve at least 50,000 vehicles daily.

Visionaries

Currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country, CCLEX is being implemented by the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC) under a joint venture agreement with the City of Cebu and Municipality of Cordova.

CCLEC, a subsidiary company of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), envisions the CCLEX to go beyond easing the traffic congestion and strengthening the capacity of the network of roads in Metro Cebu.

It sees CCLEX as becoming a means of helping spur economic growth and boosting investments not just in Cebu but throughout the Visayas Region.

The Ultimate Expressway Experience

Operated as a toll expressway, CCLEX will provide the ultimate expressway experience to Cebuanos. Motorists can expect well-maintained roads, patrol personnel that will provide road assistance, and a host of other services to ensure safe and convenient travel.

Its key features are:
● An improved RFID system that will lead to higher and more efficient lane throughput.
● Weigh-in-motion sensors that will detect overloaded vehicles.
● IP-Based Speed Detection Cameras and HD CCTVs that will cover the entire expressway for traffic monitoring and incident detection.
● Service facilities such as gasoline stations, retail outlets, convenience stores, restaurants, along with security, medical, and maintenance centers that will address the needs of every motorist who passes through the toll road.

It will pay homage to Cebu’s deep Catholic roots through a lighted cross on the twin pylon cable-stayed main bridge, highlighting the island’s significant role as cradle of Catholic devotion in the Philippines.

The target date of the bridge’s completion is timed for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines on March 16, 2021.

THE Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corp. (MPTDC) has announced that construction of a 8.25-kilometer toll road to be known as the Cebu-Cordova Bridge is targeted to start sometime in 2017 and is estimated to be completed by 2020.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, MPTDC, which is a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corp., said the project is estimated to cost around P27.9 billion, which includes the construction cost with inflation over a four-year period.

This will also include the construction of toll facilities and the implementation of the operating system, the right-of-way cost, and the financing costs. The funding will be sourced from a combination of loans from local banks and equity contribution.

Joint venture

Metro Pacific received the notices of award from both Cebu City and Cordova for the financing, design, construction, implementation, operation and maintenance of the bridge, subject to compliance with conditions precedent.

According to the disclosure, the notices of awards were issued to Metro Pacific after no one submitted comparative proposals on or before the Dec. 7, 2015 deadline, as indicated in the published “Invitation to Bid and Submit Comparative Proposals for the Project.”

The disclosure said the project, which will be implemented through an unincorporated joint venture among the company, Cebu City and Cordova is envisioned to decongest traffic in the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge.

It includes the construction of the connections to Cebu City and Cordova, the main bridge structure, viaduct, causeway, roadway and toll facilities. It is located around 7.5 kilometers south of the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and will take off from the Cebu South Coastal Road crossing the Mactan Channel to Mactan Island.

Benefits

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said the new bridge will bring wonders as a real economic engine not only for Cebu but for the entire Region 7.

He said that when he was chairman of the Regional Development Council 7, he advocated the construction of the Cordova, Cebu-Jetafe, Bohol Bridge, which was also conceptualized by the late Bohol governor Erico Aumentado.

Rama said if both Cebu-Cordova Bridge and Cebu-Bohol Bridge are realized, these will complement each other.

“This Cebu-Cordova Bridge will shorten travel time between Cebu City and Mactan airport and is economically much advantageous to all,” Rama said.

Meanwhile, Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy said he wants the third bridge to be called the Señor Sto. Niño Bridge.

Sitoy said that once realized, the third bridge will spark rapid economic development for Cordova, where SM Prime Holdings will also reclaim 1,500 hectares

Firstly, I had forgotten about this and was surprised to read it's more or less finished and soon ready to be open, Q1/2022 if I have understood it correct.

Secondly, to point fingers at early time schedules.... hell, sooo many projects in Sweden also are completed long after the initial schedule was made. Lot's of things along the way can delay the project a little, 1 (one) year is nothing in this project. Happy to see maybe I can use the new bridge going to celebrate my 60'th birthday in the same resort as I did my 50th....
