Jolina came out of nowhere east of Mindanao yesterday and caught the agencies off-guard. You're probably thinking of 19W (different storm) which has been tracked for some time as heading from the Guam region and going towards Taiwan and the southern Japanese islands. Jolina turns out to be the stronger system and has now been upgraded to Tropical Storm status (international name Conson). There are now some indications it may develop into a minimal Category 1 typhoon after landfall in Samar...

We had a good amount of rain here on Siargao and TCWS #1 kept the boats in port today. Looks like Samar is next up. As mentioned this thing came out of nowhere; the Western Pacific basin always has some surprises up its sleeve.

In this image you can see Jolina approaching Samar and 19W on the right of the picture...

The agencies have been willing this system to head north (or just disappear) for the last couple of days, but so far, it is defying their predictions and heading straight toward Leyte or Samar. It reminds me of how they kept trying to say that Yolanda was going to swing north until it didn't and slammed into Leyte. If Jolina continues on its westerly path, it might even be a threat to Bohol and Cebu. It is likely, though, that it won't get much above the tropical storm level (maybe Cat 1), but who knows? We haven't had enough excitement in the last couple of years...

Was worse than the Cat 3 typhoon in December a while back. Folks here have lost their Filipino possessions do to water in W. Leyte, and some dwellings.

Just started the generator, (8 AM), the power went off about 1 AM. Lots of rain but low to medium wind in Western Leyte. Isabel is flooded but it's very low with no drainage plan to speak of. Our house's foundation was built up before the build so no issues here. Watching the rest of the world float by though. Offering a charge to anyone who needs their pone charged.

Jolina built up from a Tropical Wave to a good sized Tropical Storm in a matter of 30-36 hours. Skipped right over Tropical Depression! While everybody's eyes were watching 19W, which will have little effect on the Phils, this one snuck in on us. Not huge wind but the rain is intense and nonstop.

Waiting to find out what knocked the electric off this time and how long to repair.
