Can't reply to messages -- the forum seems to want me to upload a file instead? Screenshot attached, but thumbnail is a purple box...

Are you talking about replying to messages or posts?

Posts - however, it looks like the "submit reply" button has re-appeared....

Here is a better description of what is occurring.

Yesterday, when I tried to reply to a post, the area where one would normally type text was blocked by a box that says "Drag files here to attach, or choose files". I could click on this to choose files from my hard drive.

I took a screenshot and tried to upload it to show the problem, but the thumbnail produced from the screenshot was just a solid color. That makes me think that images are being processed incorrectly.

Today, I realized that I can get a plain text box for replies if I go into my browser and turn javascript off. That is what I am using to reply to you now.

Which browser are you using?

I've never had to do anything with Java to get things to work on the forum. I do know that Chrome no longer supports NPAPI (technology required for Java applets).

The Java Plugin for web browsers relies on the cross-platform plugin architecture NPAPI, which had been supported by all major web browsers for over a decade. Google's Chrome version 45 and above have dropped support for NPAPI, and therefore Java Plugin do not work on these browsers anymore.

Java applications are offered through web browsers as either a web start application (which do not interact with the browser once they are launched) or as a Java applet (which might interact with the browser). This change does not affect Web Start applications, it only impacts applets.

I'm on Firefox 78. I know nothing at all about NPAPI.

No need to, it just works in the background like many other plugins or apps.

Since chrome stopped using java, I havn't noticed any difference.

You might try using another browser, just to see if you have the same problem.
