Some Air Force Pilots Are Eligible for Up to $420K in Aviation Bonus Payments

In its years long effort to get more pilots to stay in service, the U.S. Air Force is offering up to $420,000 in aviation bonuses over 12 years for some airmen, according to the service's fiscal 2021 bonus program.

Active-duty bomber, fighter, mobility, special operations and combat search-and-rescue fixed-wing pilots whose initial contract commitments expire this year are eligible to receive annual payments of $25,000 for five- to seven-year commitments or $35,000 for eight- to 12-year commitments, according to the service's latest figures provided to Military.com.

These aviators also have the option of taking upfront payments of $100,000 for the five- to seven-year terms, with the remainder of the bonus distributed annually thereafter. Those who choose eight- to 12-year contracts may request a $200,000 upfront payment, the service said.

Other pilot bonuses include:

  • Combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) rotary-wing pilots, combat systems officers and air battle managers whose initial contract commitments expire this year are eligible for annual payments of $15,000 for contract lengths of five to seven years or $25,000 for eight to 12 years.
  • Remotely piloted aircraft pilots whose initial contract commitments expire this year can receive annual payments of $25,000 for contract lengths of five to seven years or $35,000 for eight to 12 years. They can also choose upfront payments of $100,000 for contract lengths of eight to 12 years.
  • Remotely piloted aircraft pilots whose contracts expired before 2021 are eligible for annual payments of $15,000 for contract lengths of five to seven years or $25,000 for eight to 12 years.
  • Bomber, fighter, mobility, special operations or CSAR fixed-wing pilots whose contracts have expired prior to 2021 can sign up for annual payments of $15,000 for contract lengths of five to seven years or $25,000 for eight to 12 years.

For those who are non-contracted or have an expired contract, there is a five-year contract minimum and 24 years of aviation service maximum, the service said.

In both 2019 and 2020, the Air Force increased the eligibility time frame to collect a bonus, with contracts ranging from three to 12 years. And past bonus offers allowed other aviation communities to collect a bonus at the three-year mark.

However, in December, the Air Force announced it was analyzing its incentive bonuses -- traditionally offered to airmen employed in undermanned specialties and apportioned based on years of service -- to decide which to keep, alter or do away with entirely.

Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, then-deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services, said the Air Force had to reconsider its options due to high retention rates. The service finished out fiscal 2020 over its 333,700 personnel authorization, marking the highest retention rates in two decades, he said at the time.

Kelly attributed the increased retention in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused record unemployment spikes in the civilian job market. Still, the Air Force has drastically altered its bonus programs because of the pilot shortage.

In fiscal 2020, the Air Force came up 1,925 pilots short of the roughly 21,000 it needs, spokeswoman Lt. Col. Malinda Singleton told Military.com earlier this month. The service could not provide a breakdown of types of pilot communities -- such as mobility and fighter -- still experiencing manning gaps.

The service first sounded the alarm in 2016, stating that its pilot shortfall had grown by more than 700 from the previous year; it ended up 1,555 pilots short at the end of fiscal 2016, the service said at the time.

The gap then grew to a whopping 2,000 pilots in fiscal 2017. The Air Force ended fiscal 2018 with a total force pilot shortage of 1,937, and it was 2,100 pilots short in fiscal 2019, officials said.

In February 2020, the service predicted it would also fall short of its goal to produce 1,480 new pilots across the force by the end of that fiscal year. Singleton confirmed that the service did not meet that goal.

Officials observed a higher take rate for retention bonuses, but the service could not provide specifics on how many or what types of pilots opted into the bonus program.

In 2017, the service introduced a tiered bonus system to combat its shortfall, with monetary incentives of up to $455,000 over 13 years for fighter pilots.

Typical horse crap, they were deleting pilots 10 years ago and now they are short! Nut jobs!

Year I retired they were get out! Six months later they are begging me to come back at reduced salary.  

You go fight em yourself!

The Coast Guards were always begging people in the Marine Safety field to stay in, but it wasn't reduced pay. 

We had one guy who had retired as an 04 and came back in, years later. He eventually made 05. His retirement with the promotion and additional longevity, doubled in the 5 extra years he served.

It wasn't that much different in my case. I never actually left active duty. One day I was on active duty and the next I was considered recalled to active duty. I had volunteered to remain on active duty after my mandatory 30 year retirement for a coveted assignment in Sitka, Alaska.

When I was active they had a lot of 'banked' pilots.  Trained pilots they didn't need so they put them in other jobs until slots were available.  A lot of these finished their pilot training only to find out they were going to fly a desk.  I happily took a $25K bonus my last 2 years as an Engineer.

1971 offered $12,000 cash ($66,000 today), E-6, and 2 years any duty station. Came this close {} fo doing it.

MOSs (Military Occupational Specialty) 0311 = Marine grunt - all enlisted had that as their primary. Then you picked up additional ones. Had over 10 in 4 years. Military is anal about layers of codes / designations and due to  long schooling to obtain Avionics MOS, TADs (Temporary Assigned Duty) went into permanent record along with associated MOS - just like grade school. :biggrin_01:

Additionals were  - 01  Administration, 02 Intelligence :scratch_head:, 04 Maintenance Management, 57 Nuclear Biological Chemical, 62  Avionics

For reenlistment bonuses all carried a weighted factor and were additive back then   Later changed to most desired I believe. Also any medals earned.

That seemed like so much money back than, but with mine being lump sum then annual payments and with the taxes I was like what bonus lol

It was 1st house in 71 cost me $14,000
