Kanlaon Volcano emits white steam-laden plumes; over 100 quakes recorded

Kanlaon Volcano in Negros emitted white steam-laden plumes, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Monday morning.

The plumes rose 200 meters before these drifted in a southwest direction, PHIVOLCS said in its 8 a.m. bulletin.

A total of 136 volcano-tectonic earthquakes have been recorded on the volcano's western flanks in the past 24 hours, it added.

Four of the earthquakes registered between magnitude 3.2 to 4.7, PHIVOLCS said.

These were felt at Intensities II to V by residents in La Carlota and Bago City in Negros Occidental and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental.

PHIVOLCS also said Kanlaon's sulfur dioxide emission measured 438 tonnes/day on the average on June 13.

It added that inflation on mid slopes has been seen since April 2020, and deflation on the lower slopes, indicating "hydrothermal or magmatic activity is occurring beneath the edifice."

PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Renato Solidum earlier said on Monday that Kanlaon Volcano is still under Alert Level 1 and is in an "abnormal" condition.

He said residents must not go up the volcano and should keep clear of the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

PHIVOLCS also advised civil aviation authorities to remind pilots not to fly close to the volcano's summit.

It continues to monitor Kanlaon's activity.
