Palace suggests Duterte received information on a possible coup

President Rodrigo Duterte may have received information that the military was restive and could stage a coup d’etat, and this prompted him to urge the House of Representatives to revise the Constitution before his term ended, the president's spokesperson Salvador Panelo suggested on Tuesday.

"Ang premise noon, under the Constitution the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] is the protector of the people. So kung ang military alam nila na maraming kalokohan, maraming korapsyon... Alam na ng military iyon, so nagre-react sila doon, bakit ganyan," Panelo said at a news conference.

"In other words, I think it’s a fair warning to all na baka pag nagalit iyan, biglang mag-coup iyang mga iyan."

Panelo said the president would not have urged the House to act promptly on constitutional change if he had not received "very reliable" information about a coup plot.

The president said last week that government corruption would one day spur the security forces to launch a coup.

Duterte added that he was willing to listen to the military's grievances and step down if that was what they wanted.

The AFP meanwhile emphasized that there would be no coup d'etat against the government, which had doubled the salaries of servicemen and police officers beginning of last year.

AFP public affairs office chief Colonel Noel Detoyato said on July 3 that the military was a professional organization focused on accomplishing its mission .

"We are all guided by our transformation road map and our soldiers have so much to look forward to in our modernization program that is 100 percent supported by the government," Detoyato said.

"Besides, we are better compensated than before and we have to give back by serving the Filipinos with all our heart."
