Politics, Religion, and Controversial Topics on the Open Forum

One of the biggest complaints while Paul was still running the forum, was people were sick and tired of all the political discussions (not counting Philippines politics). They hated opening the Portal or New Content menu and finding that the first 20 or more threads/posts were about politics. So Paul created the Outlaw forums for political, religious and other controversial topics that was hidden from those who didn't care to partake in such subjects. When the new owner took over, we closed the Outlaw forums along with the hidden forums, the Dirty Kitchen and the Cellar. You would have thought the world had come to an end. There was a considerable amount of complaining about it. So we rethought the concept and came up with the Comfort Room (CR). A combination of the old Outlaw forums and the Dirty Kitchen. The main difference is that unlike the Dirty Kitchen which had no rules, and the Outlaw forums which had very few, the CR had the same rules as the rest of the forums, although loosely enforced. There was another big difference. The Dirty Kitchen had no moderation and the Outlaw forums were only moderated by Paul. The CR was to be moderated just like the rest of the forum, but again loosely enforced. Another difference was that the Outlaw forums and the Dirty Kitchen were open to anyone who asked. The new owner felt the CR should only be open to members as a type of reward for members who have contributed significantly to LinC and who want to post topics they can't post elsewhere on LinC. Thus there were some basic requirements to join the CRhttps://www.livingincebuforums.com/topic/108586-so-you-want-to-join-the-comfort-room/

For those of you who've never read the rules. Here is the section pertaining to this topic.

04. Prohibited Topics, Posts, Avatars and Signatures

The Comfort Room (CR) - The CR contains forums for discussing politics, religion and controversial topics. These forums are hidden from guest viewers and the general membership. The membership requirements for access to the CR are posted in the So You Want To Join The Comfort Room thread. Once you have been granted access, you may post associated topics/posts in these forums.

DO NOT post political, religious, controversial, vulgar or sexual topics/posts ANYWHERE else on the forum. Members are warned after the first infraction and banned after the second. Many people love to discuss these topics, however, many others do not. So, let's all respect each other here and keep these topics where they belong.

User's Avatars and Signatures - The same rules apply to User's Avatars and Signatures. They shall not be political, religious, controversial, vulgar or sexual in nature.

Okay, so here we are a little over a year since the CR was opened. We hardly ever have any complaints about the CR. However, we still get a fair number of complaints about political and religious posts. These complaints though, come from people who are upset that their threads/posts about politics or religion in the open forum are hidden or moved to the CR. Sometimes they are even given a warning when they persist in posting such topics. The usual response is we are being too nitpicky or it wasn't a political post at all. Some huff and puff and send a nasty PM/email telling us where we can stuff the forum and ask to be removed from the forum. People, it's not like you were fined or given 100 lashes. It's a hidden post, or a warning that can only be seen by the person warned and staff. It's certainly not akin to a Scarlet Letter. Hell, I had several warnings in my past. Way back when, Paul told me if I went off topic one more time, I would be banned from the forum permanently. If I had bitched and complained to Paul, there is a good chance he would have said don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. However, in this newer, kinder forum, my best advice is to just let it go. If a hidden post or a simple warning is enough to set you off into a heated tirade, maybe you're just too thin skinned. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The thing is Salty, under Paul's rules it seemed to work, not sure it is now or if the changes you mention are the problem. Or do you need to look elsewhere specially at the personal attacks where posters are often personally ridiculed rather than addressing the substance of the thread or post..

IMO more members are pissed off by a few who seem to like belittling others rather than responding to the actual issue being discussed. Stop it being a chest beating, pissing competition!

Valid points, but this thread isn't a general discussion about the forum, or about personal attacks, which is a whole other issue unto itself. You're not saying anything new, and it's been brought up numerous times in the past. It's walking a fine line, for the staff to determine when a member has gone too far. If you could see the hidden posts, you would see that we regularly deal with such actions. A big problem is that Mods can't be everywhere at once and numerous members may read and even respond to such posts before we see them. Now if more members would report such post, we would be notified immediately and could hopefully respond much quicker. We usually hide such posts, but we could certainly start giving warnings as well. But that goes right back to the issue that some members feel we are already over moderating. By the way, most of the time members are banned, it's for personal attacks.

Anyway, lets keep this thread about "Politics, Religion, and Controversial Topics on the Open Forum"...
