Preschool in Cebu

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a preschool in Cebu for my child. Which ones are the best and what's the tuition like?

I'm also looking for a school that can accommodate us only for a short-term stay. We don't plan to move to Cebu, but we are staying for less than a year.

Hi MJ,

Welcome to the Forum!

It might help a little if you tell us a little about your situation and area you are living in.

CIS is certainly one option, but they are also the most expensive choice in the Cebu metro area. It is an American International School, so excellence goes without saying.

More reasonable but still excellent is SHS Ateneo de Cebu. It is a Catholic school run by the Jesuits. The tuition for pre-school is about 59,000 pesos per year.  My daughter goes to Ateneo (going into 3rd grade), and your little girl will learn more than you might think was possible for a pre-schooler. For instance, they will start learning a foreign language (Chinese) right from the start. The math and language are also accelerated.

As far as a short-term stay, what kind of short-term are you talking about? The school year here starts in June and goes until March. If you will be here a shorter period, then you may want to pay by the semester (though I'm not sure that is possible for a new student).

Another option might be one of the Montessori schools. They seem to have a bit more flexibility, and their curriculum seems to be tailored more to each student's needs and abilities.

If none of those options works for you, you might want to think about hiring a one-on-one tutor for your daughter. There are many more teachers here than there are jobs for teachers.

My experience of a provincial preschool here is they teach children only to be taught the same thing again starting elementary. Admittedly they will or should get top marks at elementary. My second criticism would be that the exercise books they chose were terrible. Written by private individuals such as journalists they pose questions and problems in what was a mixture of elementary, and high school. Normally the education system prescribes a level of learning abilty and knowledge based upon age.

If your stay is short, less than a year, you may feel comfortable with a less academically superior school.  The preschool activities are often associated with getting the children ready for the more structured classes to come.  Working in groups, follow instructions singing and hand and body movement songs etc.

I’ve never been completely clear on the terms used for when children begin with the education.  You may encounter terms like daycare, preschool, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2.  These are primarily based upon age as I understand it.  If you’re residing here for one year or so, this all may be moot when you leave for another school system.  I’d be more interested in what seems to be safe and with staff who seem to enjoy working with children.

There is a common practice in the provinces, not sure about cities. A babysitter of sorts is often hired to escort the child to school and home and even provide the lunch etc.  We refer to them as Yaya. My wife’s brother was the Yaya for our three children.

I'm not sure where you'll be staying in Cebu but if it is near Barangay Tisa then this place has a pretty good pre-school through 4th grade program.  Their rates seem reasonable and this is where our daughter is enrolled for 2019.  https://www.facebook.com/comartslovesme
