MANILA, Philippines — A total of 116 flights, or 58 round trip flights, of Cebu Pacific and Cebgo have been cancelled from May 1 to 10, the airline company announced Monday.

Cebu Pacific explained that the cancellations are part of the “ongoing effort to improve on time performance and reduce inconvenience” of passengers.

Noting an “unprecedented level of disruption” to their operations, with passengers experiencing “extended delays and some on-the-spot cancellations,” Cebu Pacific said it would temporarily reduce the number of their flights.

“To create space in our schedule for operational recovery, minimize rolling delays and give passengers the chance to make alternate travel plans, we have to temporarily reduce the number of our flights given the current operating conditions, particularly in our Manila hub,” Cebu Pacific said in a statement.

“Cebu Pacific is working with the airport authorities, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to make things better for our passengers,” it added.

Below is the list of flights that were canceled as of Monday, 8:00 p.m.:

place the full cost of the ticket in a Travel fund

Passengers of canceled flights will receive a round-trip voucher which they can use for future lights, the airline company added.

It also vowed to continue to “exhaust all means to inform passengers as early as possible on any flight schedule changes.”

Cebu Pacific said it would inform its affected customers via e-mail addresses and mobile numbers provided on booking and that the passengers would no longer need to go to the airport, managing their bookings online instead.

Pretty slick, huh?  Now the question is, are the ones they cancelled the ones that would be cancelled anyway?  Or perhaps they guessed wrong and others will still be cancelled anyway.

Manpower issues among reasons for Cebu Pacific flight cancellations
spacer.png

MANILA, Philippines–Summer plans of thousands of travelers were affected as Cebu Pacific canceled more than 160 flights over two weeks due to what it described as an “unprecedented level of disruption.”

The Gokongwei family-led airline, which is dealing with a host of problems that includes the maintenance of at least two aircraft and the typical air congestion in Manila, is also grappling with an emerging issue involving its pilots and cabin crew, multiple industry sources told the Inquirer.

There has also been an uptick in crew members not showing up for work around the time the cancelations began last week. These average around 35 to 40 cabin crew employees per day, a source said.

Another source said the problems started shortly after Cebu Pacific’s cabin crew last April 16 voted overwhelmingly in favor of the establishment of the airline’s first labor union that became known as Juan Wing Association of the Philippines.

Charo Logarta Lagamon, Cebu Pacific spokesperson, said on Tuesday they were hoping to restore normal operations after canceling another 116 flights scheduled from May 1-10.

“We are optimistic the latest round of cancelations will normalize operations,” she said. “We are hopeful we will resolve our situation at the soonest possible time.”

On Juan Wing, Lagamon pointed to a statement issued by Cebu Pacific chief operations officer Michael Ivan Shau on the Gokongwei group’s cooperative approach toward unions.

“Consistent with the long standing engagement policy of our parent company, JG Summit, Cebu Pacific believes that there is no differentiation between unionized and non-unionized employee groups when it comes to listening to and providing for the needs of our employees,” Shau said.

“In fact, JG Summit has a track record of maintaining open, transparent and mutually beneficial relationships with all 27 unions existing across the conglomerate,” he added.

Members of Juan Wing could not be immediately reached for comment on Tuesday.

Cebu Pacific management and Juan Wing’s representatives are expected to hold their first meeting in the coming weeks, the statement showed.

Since disruptions began last Friday, Cebu Pacific had canceled over 160 flights, affecting over 22,000 passengers, Lagamon said.

Cebu Pacific mounts over 400 flights a day, meaning the disruptions affect about 3% of flights on daily basis.

Flight cancelations are part and parcel of an airline’s operations. And while Cebu Pacific’s case is amplified by its sheer size— it corners over 50% of all domestic flights— the current level of flight disruptions are significant by historical standards.

Carmelo Arcilla, executive director of the Civil Aeronautics Board, said they are coordinating with other government stakeholders to resolve the issue.

“The entire civil aviation family, as a team, is looking at the situation now,” Arcilla said. On top of the agenda is finding the exact cause of the cancelations, he noted.

“We are trying to get to the bottom of this. We’ve asked Cebu Pacific to submit more data,” he said. /jpv

First they send you an e-mail warning your credit card information has been hacked and now they cancel flights. Something smells a bit off.
