Painting Nails Tips

I want to paint (white)  a bit of ply that has been nailed...

What do I use to stop the nails rusting and discolouring the paint later ?

From that article:

Replacing Old Nails

Removing old nongalvanized nails and replacing them with a galvanized variety is a viable option if the old nail heads are sticking out far enough to remove the nails without damaging the surface beneath. Galvanized nails will not rust. The old rust stains, however, will still be in the area and have to be sanded away just the same before priming and painting the surface.

I dont see why anyone would not use galvanized nails ?

The problem with galvanised nails with high exposure to ocean air is what do you think happens to the gal coating when you hit the head of the nail with your hammer ????

Well it strikes the gal coating off of course , have seen it time and time again ...the only way to ensure no rust is to use stainless nails and screws .....:twocents:

And it is still cheaper than re-visiting things at a later point in time .....we use stainless everything in coastal areas , batten screws , gutter brackets , clouts ...roof screws ...the problem in the PI is availability...

Our stores here sell brass nails, sold per kilo.. They use them for boat building.. Not cheap mind!

Lol. That's what I was going to say. There used to be rust converter product on the market. It was a milky liquid that would convert red oxide to inert black oxide. I just googled it to Shoppee
