Duterte vows to ‘wipe from the earth’ surviving members of Parojinog clan

President Duterte has threatened to “wipe from the earth” surviving members of the Parojinog family, a political clan linked to the drug trade.

Last year, police raided the compound of the family, killing Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog, his wife Susan, his brother Board Member Octavio Parojinog, sister Mona and 12 others.

Yesterday (Wednesday, November 28) warned mayors he would not hesitate to kill them if they were involved in drugs. He then singled out the Parojinogs, who he accused of ordering the killing of anti-narcotics cops.

Speaking at the groundbreaking of an airport modernisation project in Ozamiz, he said: “If you are an evil mayor or councillor and you think of disgusting things, or even ten times more disgusting than that, I can do it better 50 times than you can. Do not intimidate me. I will strangle you if I lose my patience, you son of a bitch.

“To the Parojinogs, I will wipe you from the face of the earth.”

The president said the deadly raid in July last year was part of his crackdown on drugs. It was plotted by police Superintendent Jovie Espenido, who was formerly the police chief of Albuera, Letye, when its mayor Rolando Espinosa killed inside a jail cell in November 2016.

Supt. Espenido had recently been assigned to the Eastern Visayas but the president announced yesterday that he was sending him back to Ozamiz City to finish off the Parojinog clan.

“I am here at the Ozamiz airport. They said they want him [Espenido] back,” he said, drawing cheers from the audience.

“My order is for him to wipe out that son of a bitch family of the mayor.”

The president’s speech came a day after he announced that he planned to form a “death squad” to go after the communist New People’s Army’s Special Partisan Unit, also known as “sparrow” units.

He said the death squad, which will be composed of civilians, would target idlers and “potential NPAs”.

His words have drawn strong criticism from human rights groups and opposition politicians.

I have been a strong supporter of Duterte’s drug war however when dose the war on drugs transition to muder.  If this isn’t just bluster then I think he may have made that transition.

He made that transition long before he ever was elected. He is a thug, and always has been.

Yes..  to fight thugs with thugs.  How else might he have any success?  Should he just ask them nicely to stop?

President or drug dealer ... an Authoritarian strongman is still an Authoritarian strongman.

Drugs, and their dealers is not the problem ... it is a symptom of the problem.

Wealth inequality is the problem. All the wealth is flowing to the top of the pyramid, no wonder those at the bottom take shortcuts to earn money and dull their situations.

You don't need socialism, you just need to ensure the wealthy have a little more long term vision.

It is like a forest. In a healthy forest not every tree will get the same amount of water, and some will get more than they need, but if only a few select trees start to absorb all the water, the rest start to dry out. When the spark starts the fire, the dry ones burn quickly and hotly, and if sufficient numbers burn, even the healthier ones will burn too.

With due respect to your opinion , this particular forest did not have the time available for delicate diplomatic behaviour ....if drastic measures were not taken the whole forest was going to burn anyway ....I have been to the PI many times over (30+) over a 15 year period and seen the descending trend which the drug problem has caused , and it was never going to be an easy fix. I have spent some time in Davao talking directly to people involved in the fight against drugs and their words were ...1 way will take 5 years to fix ...the other way will take 20 years to fix...we choose the quicker solution...

I guess if you lived here you would better understand the situation better...As they say,"this is not Kansas".

Go Mr. President..do what is necessary to clean up the mess you inherited.

Fantastic post Lee. A point of view that permeates the people at the provincial level here.

For me, I am glad to see that he is going after some of the actual problem, and not just killing off the poor people in the streets.

I will just say that from my perspective it seems the hens in the hen house realized they had a fox as a guard dog so they went out and hired a new guard dog, unfortunately they hired a weasel for a guard dog.

It is rather tough to form an accurate perspective when you aren't here to see it for yourself and talk to the people who are living it firsthand.

So along comes Roddy, someone that was not in the club

Passing laws, obtaining political office, doing business in  a way that ensured that they would obtain more wealth,

DU30 is and was certainly in the club and assured that his family will do well. Not different than any others power families. Being in control of one of the biggest city for a nearly 2 decades you can only imagine the fortune amassed and the control he gained (the whole south).

Also, unlike Binay, Duterte comes from an established political family. Additional, he is well entrenched and supported by established (rich) Filipino and Filipino-Chinese community, as well political families.Everybody wanted him as a running mate and some wanted him as president.  No wonder being supported by the south and Cebu (being a Cebuano) - half of the country already assured.
