Rappler indicted: Philippine government to charge veteran journalist critical of Duterte with tax evasion

There are many news article about that. The question remains if this is because of the election in May.

For me it is nearly clear cut: Foreign entities invested in Rappler via bonds and is nothing wrong with that (as it does not affect the ownership). The investment was public information.

Then the gov tries to charge them because of violation against ownership rules (well bonds do not violate that). The next move is tax evasion. This of course can be framed in thousand ways, but the deal was open  - one way or another the gov will succeed. It is not the first time news agencies (or newspaper) have been sold over political pressure.

Yes it does appear to be clear cut against Rappler according to the article you listed. Of course we will see what happens.

The case stems from the issuance of Philippine Depositary Receipts to the Omidyar Network Fund, which was set up by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Rappler "gained close to 162.5 million pesos ($3.05 million) from the transaction, which it failed to declare in its tax return," the department said in a statement.

Also, he threaten several times that he does not renew ABS-CBN news franchise. The relation is similar to Trump and CNN (Duterte and ABS-CBN).

Will see what happens...
