difference of opinion - For me - visibility is in itself a deterrent

I usually carry one of these bags depending on where we're going, for how long. also backpack sometimes

Edit: carry backpack as shoulder bag most of the time

Have practiced being Quick Draw McGraw with all

I'm of the same philosophy, Coming here since 1984 and having a couple of stays of 3 months duration we have only had one incident of concern.
We were walking mid afternoon from south bus terminal to Colon, not sure what Street now. My wife who is 100 times more street wise in the Philippines said we were being followed?
She insisted that we enter a small shop. (the owner) said can i help.
She explained we were being followed, BTW, she is not the paranoid type... He left the shop to investigate and we both saw a chap running, It was him according to my wife..

Other members that have mentioned Batons and Spray partially type and size are all very helpful and i thank you.

I do have a torch that was mentioned that has the sharp edges on the outer rim and i guess if used would be a good option. I bought it in Hong Kong.

As far as Martial arts goes.
I had a good friend married to a filipina who was a black belt in Taekwondo.
His wife was a black belt in hapkido.

He showed me a few moves over the many Bbqs we had, but at 70 i don't know if was any use to me.
You need years of practice AND confidence.

Sure if my wife was in danger I'd have a go but what the outcome would be is subjective.

Seems to have a dedicated inner silver ring that would do far more damage.

I only can repeat what our old blackbelt karate trainer told us.

Karate s NOT to attack, its purely for defending.

BUT - if someone attacks you - you have only 1 shot to tell him that "You better dont try a second time"
So your first DEFENSE MOVE (mostly a blocking technique against a punch) must already so painfull for the attacker that he looses any interest for more - so if my blocking breaks the attackers arm ... "See,  I told you guy ..."

Like I said before - usually I give an attacker only 1 "touch" to myself :-)

You are a much kinder  person than I am

Some very good baton use vids on YouTube but geared for law enforcement  - they stress containment rather than totally disabling

Not trying to come across as a Billy Bad A$$ - if I could still run away I would but I can't.

 If they break something, it might not ever heal right. Better to ask forgiveness if they can still hear me than allow them that close. 

Even Tata, if she comes to bed late,  knows to not touch me when I'm sleeping , came very close to hitting her several times when she first moved in. Now she says "my love" if she wants to wake me up or just gets into bed and subconsciously I'll know she's there  - then she can reach out.
