I had  Sharps Carbine like that cap gun, worked just like original.

salutes were not that exciting so one of the neighborhood kid's dad showed us how to make our own more potent stuff out of simple stuff found in most corner stores.   what he showed us was take a common roll of caps for a cap gun,  and pierce and thread each gunpowder dot in the center onto a long needle by folding the roll over back and forth.  this eventually made a zigzag accordion shaped rectangular bundle.  next step is gently slide out the needle,  then lightly wrap the bundle with scotch tape to keep it's shape.  finally, insert the head of a match into the center as a fuse/detonator.   if done correctly these things were very potent and deafening compared to salutes.  they were time consuming to make but for us neighborhood kids it was great to have powerful firecrackers any old time we wanted

Homemade smoke bomb

2 coke caps - wooden kitchen matches - cut heads off - put into caps - tape or better yet use chewing gum (more smoke and stink) then tape to hold together - throw  on ground or against wall

Best was throw an M-80 into sewer - lite of course -  ever seen a depth bomb in the movies or bottle rocket in Coke bottle fights.

whenever we got our hands on m-80' s we would make time bombs out of them and put them in the milk boxes on the front porches of houses late at nite.   we would simply light a cigarette and stick it sideways on the end of the fuse by piercing the cigarette with it near the filter.   this gave us 4 or so minutes time to get to a good hiding place and gleefully wait for the explosion and carnage

In our school, M-80's exploding in the toilet bowl was pretty standard.
