Locked Up Abroad

Recommended Posts

Locked Up Abroad" is a Nat Geo television show that airs here in the States. This guy Greg Williams gets kidnapped in Cebu at the docks in 1996. He is held for 13 days he doesn't know where because he is blindfolded and taken by boat to an undisclosed location. He befriends one of his captors (Abu Sayyaf) who helps him escape. Very good show and another well done episode. Anybody see this?

To make a long story short it occurs to me that Mr. Greg Williams made the whole thing up! From what I gather there is no record of his kidnapping. If you get a chance check it out I believe you can see it at Hulu.com. Or read his book.

I think you mean it's a good story. :) I believed it to. However, an Abu Sayyaf is not going to risk his life or his families life to help a Christian missionary escape.

Earl, I think he said he believed it to be true. That's what I read into his post. Since I've niether read or seen the TV episode that you refer to I have no opinion as to the "facts" behind the story. Who knows what leads a man to do the things he does. Perhaps his belief in his faith was evident to the captor and he chose to be merciful, I don't know. I've got to get the book. Thanks

if it's some sort of conspiracy, it looks like his kano wife was in on it as well.

There are several utube videos about the Burnhams> I lived in Mindinao when this kidnapping of the burnhams took place (about 2000)and followed it closely,They were kidnapped by the abu sayaf in southern Palawan and brought to tawi tawi. The utube videos begin with the following,The husband was killed and the wife wounded in a cross fire when troops exchanged fire with abu sayaf.

I thought my smiley face took care of the semantics. :) It doesn't matter what I believe or what the man on the moon believes. That's not my point. The question is, did it happen?

Watching the show I was stunned that somebody was kidnapped in Cebu (the port) where I have been lost wandering around looking for a friend who worked there. So I was a bit taken aback. This is my favorite show and has had some amazing episodes. But has RawTV and Nat Geo been hoodwigged by this guy?

Now the couple who was kidnapped were held for over a year and it's well documented incident. This however is not. I haven't been able to find a thing about it.

Mr. Whippy come on brother that's Columbia!

I just checked Hulu.com the episode isn't available. If you get the national geographic channel be sure to watch an encore episode. Let us know if anybody finds anything on-line that cooberates this man's story.

This guy says he was kidnapped in the southern philippines, not central philippines and was held in Basilan-which is Mindinao. After he escaped he found out it was Easter Sunday-he found a dounut shoppe, where he ended up having dounuts with a filippina and her daughter, awhile later they got married and lived in the PI for two years before going to the states. He did say they took him on a long boat trip from Cebu blindfolded.

After reading the book i would find it hard to understand why anyone would go to some much detail about what happened if in fact it was not true.

just in case anybody's interested, there is a British version of this tv show, called 'Banged Up Abroard' - which isn't actually about women getting pregnant on holiday, but about mostly men getting arrested and imprisoned overseas, usually - unlike this fellow, who seems totally innocent - after having done something very stupid indeed.

none of the episodes are in the Philippines, but some are relevant to Asia, Thailand and Hong Kong.

bottom line seems to be that if you are going to do a crime, it's better to do it in one of the world's liberal democracies, where the justice and penal system passes muster, rather than in somewhere like the Philippines where it doesn't.
