THE state weather bureau has placed Eastern Samar province on Wednesday under Tropical Storm Warning Signal Number 1 as Tropical Depression Urduja slightly changed its course while moving closer to Sorsogon-Northern Samar area. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Eastern Samar would experience 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) winds in the next 36 hours. Pagasa said that at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, Urduja was located at 395 kilometers (km) east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The tropical cyclone was forecast to move northwest at 7 kph, Pagasa said, adding that Urduja is expected to be at 260 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, by Thursday afternoon, December 14. Urduja, the 21st tropical cyclone in the country this year, was packing maximum winds of 55 kph near the center and gusts of up to 65 kph, added Pagasa. With this, scattered to widespread rains is expected over Visayas and Bicol Region. Pagasa said that fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts must not to venture out over the eastern seaboard of Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas province due to moderate to rough seas. Northern Cebu under Signal No. 1 due to Tropical Depression Urduja

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed Northern Cebu, including Bantayan Island, under Storm Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression Urduja is expected to make landfall this evening at Northern Samar.

Under tropical storm signal No. 1, winds with speeds up to 60 kilometers per hour are present and may lead to slight damages to houses, and other infrastructures.

The severe weather bulletin issued by the state weather bureau spotted the eye of Urduja, which has weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical depression, at 140 kilometers east of Guiauan, Eastern Samar.

It has maximum sustained winds at 65 kilometers per hour and moving west at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

Other areas in the Visayas placed under Signal No. 1 are Southern Leyte, Biliran Island, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Capiz, Northern Iloilo, and Aklan.

As of 8 a.m., there have been four canceled boat trips in Cebu City due to Urduja.

The list below are the following trips that were canceled as of 8 p.m.:

Pier 1 to Ormoc

Hagnaya to Masbate

Pier 1 to Camotes

Camotes to Ormoc

According to Jerome Cayabyab, station commander of the Philippine Coastguard, as of 8 a.m. today, Pag-asa issued a signal no. 1 in northern Cebu.

He added that they have signaled their coastguard substations in the northern area to warn vessels not to travel due to bad weather conditions.

No classes from elementary to high school in Mandaue City

 Thursday, December 14, 2017

MANDAUE City Mayor Luigi Quisumbing announced on Thursday the suspension of classes in all public schools from elementary to high school. Quisumbing said, "In light of information from Pagasa that we are expecting between 50-100mm of rainfall over the next 24 hours, I have decided to cancel public school classes up to the high school level." He said private schools are encouraged to cancel classes as management deems appropriate. "All emergency services and engineering crews are hereby placed on red alert status until the weather disturbance has cleared the PAR," he added. (FMG/SunStar Cebu)

Tomorrow is when SHS Ateneo de Cebu (in Mandaue) is having their Christmas parties (no classes), and so far there has been no cancellation. Cancelling school tomorrow would mean cancelling the parties completely, since today was the last day of class. Public schools are in class through the 22nd, so they would just have normal classes tomorrow.

Whereas no other community leaders in the Cebu metro area have jumped on this bandwagon, it seems like the Mandaue mayor has jumped the gun on this though. The storm appears to be weakening rapidly, and is mostly just a big rainstorm now. There appears to be little danger of high winds.

Travel ban raised due to typhoon

 Friday, December 15, 2017

THE chief of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Cebu Station yesterday said that 22 vessels were prohibited from plying their routes to various destinations in the Visayas and Mindanao due to the typhoon. Commander Jerome Cayabyab, chief of the PCG-Cebu, said that the number of affected vessels will go up once their substations submit their respective reports. Cayabyab said the travel ban started at 5 a.m. yesterday after the Philippine Atmospheric Geographical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) raised Typhoon Signal No. 1 in Cebu. He said that the public must understand that their mandate is to prohibit any vessel from sailing once the weather bureau raises a typhoon signal. The affected routes are from Cebu to Ormoc City, Bantayan Island, Camotes Island, Bohol, Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City and Dumaguete City, among others. Cayabyab said the travel ban will only be lifted once Pagasa lowers the typhoon signal. (EOB)
