Virtual colonoscopy requires the same prep as for a regular colonoscopy, plus you drink a special liquid after the prep that causes any irregularities in your colon.

This should have read:  "Virtual colonoscopy requires the same prep as for a regular colonoscopy, plus you drink a special liquid after the prep that causes any irregularities in your colon to show up better in the imaging."

I was thinking of having a colonoscopy in cebu. I've never had one does anyone have any info on it costs, hospital and doctor etc.?

You've already gotten some good suggestions above.  The costs are reasonable and I believe most major hospitals prices will be the same.  You can call or stop into the endoscopy unit and there's a good chance there is a list of procedures and prices. You may want to add an upper GI exam as well.  The clinic charges a fixed price. The examining doctor charges you a fee for the procedure. If you opt for an anaesthesiologist that will also be a fee.  There are some minor costs for the meds used to cleanse the bowel. You CAN be admitted as a patient which might be as cheap or cheaper than a hotel.  That is if you don't live nearby.

If there is any polyp removed, it is common to have a biopsy done which takes a week or more for results.

You can look in the forum archives for a lot of recommendations for a gastroenterologist.

I had it done 9 years ago and it was a non-event - will get it done again next year.  Not a hassle at all and no discomfort.  Had a friend and his wife get one done a few months ago at the new UC Med hospital Cebu near S&R and they said it was as wonderful as it could be.  The hospital was empty and service was great.  Don't remember the price, but obviously much cheaper than at home.

It would be nice to know the cost and doctors name

The first time I had a colonoscopy the results showed either 5 or 7 polops (sp?), with some good and some bad, whatever that meant. That was about 25 years ago. Since then I have had one every 5 years or so. Was due over a year ago and will have it done soon, before the end of the year with my deductible in mind. Can hardly wait. What joy. :-):-):-)

My last one was in 2009 in the USA, so getting close to the 10 year mark. The worst part was drinking the prep stuff. Must have been a gallon of it. I went under anesthesia so it was painless. They gave me a shot of something and the next thing I knew, it was done and I was in the recovery room...

I had TRICARE Prime so it was no charge to me. The next one will be MEDICARE and TRICARE For Life so again no cost to me...

The new ColoGuard seems nice.  It is looking for the microscopic blood that bleeding polyps throw off.  Yes, if it is positive, then you need to have the full-bore colonoscopy.  However, if it is negative, then you need to do nothing more. In the perfect world, one does the ColoGuard once yearly. Most insurances pay for the ColoGuard, but check first... AND also check on their willingness to pay for the full-bore colonoscopy if the ColoGuard is positive. Without any issues being seen, the current recommendations are for the colonoscopy to be done every 10 yrs.  All this from my doctor whom I visited this morn for this very topic. I'm doing the ColoGuard... none of that horrible prep! Yea!

FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Tests)

I do this every year, and just finished my annual for this year. Been negative every time. I keep putting off the Colonoscopy until they tell me its absolutely necessary.

Just remember that colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers.  It's also one of the most treatable as long as it's detected early enough.

Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard because it is the only test that can identify and treat polyps in the entire colon. Further, if a polyp is detected during screening, it often can be removed and biopsied at that time, eliminating the need for additional procedures.

Thanks for your concern. Appreciate it. I try to put off surgery (any surgery) if not necessary as I almost died after my last one in January 2016. I do not recover well and post op usually triggers my heart issues causing me to end up in ICU for a week or more.

Maybe you should check out the virtual colonoscopy. It is as accurate as the regular colonoscopy without them sticking anything inside you. It is performed using a CT Scan machine. They only have to do the regular colonoscopy if they find something during the virtual colonoscopy.

I'll ask Naval Hospital Guam if they have that capability. Thanks.

I am a colonscopy specialist having had had at least 5 in the last 20 years. I would recommend Dr. Lou Di Angelique Limquato on the 3rd floor of Chong Hua Medical Arts. Just had one using her last year. I chose no sedation and the entire procedure was painless.  She is a great doctor speaks flawless English and does a really good job. If a woman doctor is not your cup of tea I can recommend Dr. Rody Go on first floor of Chong Hua Medcial Arts. I have used him also. Cost depends on sedation or no sedation.  From php 14,000 to php 39000.  But for the prep do not use fleets phosphor soda. I has been banned in USA as it can cause kidney failure. I use the ducolax / miralax prep which is taken with gatorade and is no problem to take if you like gatorade.  You can google this  prep and the miralax can be obtained from Amazon.   Prep is no problem to take. my 2 centavos
