Many electric generating plants have seismic or vibration sensors that automatically shutdown the turbine when it goes over a certain level. Most likely the sensor detected the seismic event prior to your human senses! :D

That. And seismic waves travel slower than electricity. I think so, at least.

Maybe someone can Google that for us, haha.

(Hope all are well and intact)

Seismic P waves travel around 7-8 km/sec while S waves travel around 3-4 km/sec (according to Google). Electrons travel at almost the speed of light (around 280,000 km/sec).

Large building collapsed in Kananga, just pancaked.  Many feared dead.  Substandard building materials?  I'm sure we will find out.

We were in SM Consolacion when it happened, but we didn't feel anything. I did get a text from NDRRMC notifying me that it had occurred.

eek  I have a house in Kananga!   and I have been in that  Kida Grocery many times and Met the Chinese owner.   This one hits home.   Report from the house sitters is that the house is fine but the ref tipped over and got dented.    My wifes  HS batchmate  FB chat group reported that people were still trapped in the Grocery and were texting .. Rescuers going slow as worried about causing further collapse.

Palompon is about 40 kilometres from Kananga. News from in the Palompon township, by the beach near Palompon and 9 kilometres from Palompon up in the mountains.

No damage, no deaths and the power is out.

They were aware of deaths in Kananga and said at the moment the death toll is 6. They said you can't get past Kananga to get to Ormoc. I suggested going via Isabel to get to Ormoc instead and they thought Isabel might be blocked too!

Palompon is a port town so people in Palompon can get out by boat and get restocked for essentials in Cebu City if required.

I forgot to ask if the RORO between Palompon and Bogo is still running as the main thing that keeps it in business is the bus from Tacloban to Cebu City each day. The Tacloban to Cebu City bus can't operate until it can get past Kananga.

They could take the road from Palompon thru Matag-ob to Ormoc.  Actually shorter but thru the mountains, so it might be closed too.  The road is new but still occasionally cracks and slides due to poor drainage.

The road thru Kananga is the main road and I'm sure it won't be closed for long.  They are not going to isolate Palompon.  Might have just been a temporary situation.  If they don't know about the alternate route thru Matag-ob, you are likely not getting good info.

Thankyou. I have travelled from Palompon to Matag-ob hundreds of times. My ex wife's family lives on that road, 16 kilometres from Matag-ob.  When everything was dirt, including the road from Palompon to Villaba, the bus from Tacloban to Cebu City used to pass by our gate. When the road was concreted to Villaba, the Cebu City bus switched to that route instead as it was quicker.

To get to Ormoc from Matag-ob, that road meets the road between Tacloban and Ormoc on the edge of Kananga.
