Yesterday (Wednesday) it looked as though this system had dissipated.

Showing signs of more convection today although a typhoon-strength storm isn't expected at the moment.

Just a weekend rainmaker for MIndanao and the Visayas. As always things can change though.

9 am update from JTWC includes a bit of an upgrade as well as a (very technical) explanation of why the sat images look "ominous".

Well you just might get your wish as it is coming down pretty good right now and it is still quite a bit away from Philippines.

It has looked like it and felt like it several times here in the last couple of weeks but no rain.. it has been over 2 months since it rained here.. 2 or 3 days of nice steady rain would be welcome here

SYNOPSIS: AT 4:00 PM TODAY, THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPPRESSION "CRISING" WAS ESTIMATED BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA AT 555 KM EAST OF MAASIN, SOUTHERN LEYTE (10.4ºN, 129.9ºE) WITH MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS OF 45 KPH NEAR THE CENTER AND GUSTINESS OF UP TO 55 KPH IT IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST NORTHWEST AT 22 KPH.

FORECAST: Rains with Gusty winds is expected over the provinces of Samar and Northern Leyte. Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and isolated thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides will be experienced over Bicol region and the rest of Eastern Visayas. Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms will prevail over Mindanao and the rest of Visayas. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will be experienced over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast to East will prevail over Northern Luzon and coming from the Northeast to North over Bicol region and Eastern Visayas. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Northeast slight to moderate seas.
