My take on loading power inverters
Paul posted a topic in Electricity / Power: Mains, Solar, Hydro & Wind Power
In a recent thread, the talk about voltage inverters caused me to think of something. I know some of you folks will be more voiced than I am regarding power inverters. Not sure how you load them. But, one thing I learned from old school guys was, never load an inverter too heavily, especially Chinese made ones. The heaviest load I put on any inverter is 50% to 70%, tops. I never run them at 100% capacity. Imagine running one, day in, day out, at 100% rated capacity. How long would you expect it to last doing so? I had never thought about that, prior to someone asking me that ques- 7 replies

Solar Array Install - COMPLETE (Mandingo)
Paul posted a topic in Electricity / Power: Mains, Solar, Hydro & Wind Power
The idea to create this thread came to mind when Mandingo posted in another thread, regarding his costs of operating a generator during the months of January and February, this year. So, Mandingo, I hope this little (okay, some what time consuming) thread will help you sort out what it may cost you to install a good starter solar array. First, the visual aid. (It always helps to have an idea as to what you will have once it is installed.) Primary parts (most viewable in the image above): 4 each - 100 watts Just Solar panels - $540 ($135 x 4) 1 each - MorningStar ProStar 30m contr- 14 replies

Power cuts? Brownouts? Mains interruptions of any kind? No worries. You can still have lighting around the outside perimeter of your home / property. We do. I bought three (3) 12vdc, 10 watts flood lamps off eBay, late last year. They cost a little over $10.00 each, shipped. Three of them together only draw 2.5 amperes. Taking their compact size into consideration, they actually light up a decent sized area of the property. Installing them, along with a controller that will automatically switch the lights on and off, is a dream. Basically, set it and forget it. Below

I was reading another topic just a moment ago. It was one from earlier this year where members were discussing solar arrays. I happened over a post I made at the time. It reminded me of some information I have been seeking. I don't recall where I found the video. Perhaps posted by another member? I don't know. I search so frequently for things, I tend to forget where I started anyway, once I have found them. Anyway, here is the video: The guy sells these complete systems (eBay homecsp YouTube: HomeCSP) for what I would consider reasonable costs. However, while the trackers c

Solar Panels for Home Generation
tomaw posted a topic in Electricity / Power: Mains, Solar, Hydro & Wind Power
Is anyone in Cebu or surrounding area using solar energy to generate electricity for their home? If so, how's it working out for you? Has it saved you money on your electric bill? Can you go 100% solar and not use the electric company at all? I appreciate any advice based on positive or negative experiences you've had.- 113 replies

Here ya go, Theb. First things first. Unfortunately, I do not have a camera here. So, images will have to be from the site(s) involved. Now. A friend, who lives in California, ordered a complete Do-It-Yourself Solar Panel Kit on eBay (USA), from a company called Ever Bright Solar. The following items were in the box that he shipped to me: 1 each - 40 3x6 Original Untabbed Solar Cells DIY Panel Kit w/ Wires Flux Diodes 1 each - Junction Box with connectors The items still necessary to complete the construction of the panel, are listed below: 1

How to correctly interconnect multiple batteries to form one larger bank. Reprinted by written permission from David Small. www.smartguage.co.uk Two things I have noticed in my (more than) 20 years in this business are that:- A. Many "specialists" simply tell you..... "do it this way, this is the correct way" without ever showing why they consider it to be the correct way, and often it isn't, which is perhaps why they couldn't show you why it is(!) B. Some things have been done for so long, in a certain manner, that it seems they must be the best way of doing it. Otherwise why hasn't ano
