The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has discovered a possible modus operandi among street children. A May 18 video from the MMDA Metrobase CCTV showed seven children targeting a truck at a corner of the Quirino-Osmeña Highway. The incident happened past 9 p.m. While one child was peddling rags to the truck’s driver, six other children were attempting to steal the car battery found on the truck’s side. The children ran away after the truck driver got out of his vehicle. Based on the video, these children then gathered on the highway’s center island, walking the streets only after cars had stopped on the red light. They went after another truck. Its driver immediately got out and chased them. Yet while the driver was away, another child managed to get to the truck. The MMDA cannot confirm if the said child managed to take anything from the vehicle. The MMDA said these children most likely belong to an organized group. In fact, groups of street children doing the same thing are often spotted at Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard in Sta. Mesa, the Santolan-Ortigas intersection, Araneta to E. Rodriguez, Mindanao Avenue, Congressional Avenue, and A. Bonifacio Avenue. According to the MMDA, their Street Dweller Care Unit rescues around five children from the streets each day. The MMDA advises motorists to avoid leaving their cars and going after the children who target their vehicles. Those on the road should make sure that their vehicles stay locked. The backs of the delivery trucks should be secured as well.
