    Not an eco-bag

These nicely crafted bags from Bicol... They were outside of a feed store I frequent to get empty rice sacko's. Hadn't seen them before. Mr. Westerner (even here 3+ years) thought they were some form of do-gooder "eco-bag." Nope. They are rooster bags, for carrying your bird around. My filipina says call it a chicken, not a bird! Bags are p45. I always like these simple moments when you learn what you are seeing is actually something different, and another layer of life here comes into focus. Also, must be some kind if industrious business there in Bicol knocking these out... they were very nice.

    OZboys's new drone delivery system

My first thought was if it can accept a pizza - lots of delivery guys will be out of a job Much quicker than a car and no tip

Rockford IL could use the Jeepny system

Would be if time was of a concern - since it isn't not a problem My reason for posting was that many "affluent" people who do drive (2 / 3 car families - mine at one time had 4 for 3 people) don't realize the hardship that can be imposed by a very limited mass transit system Growing up in Chicago was no problem - here for those without one it is - especially working people who can't afford an extra $7:50 / $10 a day to get to or back from work.
  10. Still one of my favorite restaurants in Cebu even though prices have gone up significantly in the past couple years, and the menu is now in Spanish, English, and Korean. http://www.ipars.com.ph/menu/ The Paella de la Casa for 1850 pesos is good for 6 people and absolutely delicious.

  14. I think you are close.. but not QUITE correct.. I believe the moment a Filipino makes a PLEDGE or OATH of allegiance to another country then they must "reaffirm" that they still have loyalty to the Philippines (an administrative process with a cost). Jawny is right about recent thread where this subject was debated a bit. I THINK my sons avoid this as they've never had to "make an OATH". This would not be true for an adult Filipino immigrant to Canada who must go through naturalization process. We did already confirm.. in the earlier thread.. with reference I believe.. that both Philippines and Canada actually both support dual citizenship.. unlike some other countries. Nonetheless, we'll confirm all this at BI and DFA the next time we go there. But I THINK we're clear at this point. There may be other issues that arise after my sons have an extended period of residence in Canada.. but they will likely have to deal with that themselves. As Paddy put it, with a passport and a SIN they are good to go.. and could take residence and get a job there as soon as they reach the age... and get Canadian student prices for university.. and apply for an OSAP grant once they are residents.. and get OHIP.
  15. Congratulations Dave. Passport and SIN and they’re good to go! Per Davaoeno, I would be inclined to check out the dual citizen situation and formalize it if necessary.

  17. In recent weeks there was a lengthy LinC thread related to the topic of dual citizenship and whether children lose their Filipino citizenship under some circumstances. As I recall, the situation differs if the child was naturalized. In the OP instance, this is not a naturalization process, but a right of birth. Now the children only have the problem of learning how to be polite (except in hockey games).

  19. Dave- I believe that the moment your sons got Canadian passports they lost their Philippines citizenship ( per Philippines law). However it's fairly easy to reclaim it. Please advise me if I am wrong.

  23. Not 100% sure what you are referring to.. and it may be a slight difference in US vs Canadian law. My sons were born in Philippines, so they were born as Philippine citizens. However, because they are born as the children of a Canadian citizen, even if outside Canada, they are entitled to Canadian citizenship. So, I applied for and obtained a Canadian Citizenship Certificate. This is a document in Canada that confirms.. or certifies.. their Canadian citizenship. It's an important and irrevocable document. Most Canadians can "prove" that they are Canadian citizens by producing a birth certificate showing that they were born in Canada. Immigrants to Canada, who go through a process and are GRANTED Canadian citizenship, are given a Certificate to "certify" that they have been granted citizenship. . My sons were born as Canadian citizens (because they have my DNA) but because they have Philippine birth Cert they need the Certificate to "prove" they are Canadian citizens. So.. as of today.. they are Philippine citizens (and by virtue of birth certificate can prove it) and they are also Canadian citizens (and by virtue of the Citizenship they can prove it). Today they are dual citizens. There is nothing left to prove or perfect. My sons can now live, work, study, vote (when 18) and own property in either Canada or the Philippines. They already have Philippine passport. Now they can get Canadian passport.
  24. For anyone who's still interested, I picked up both the ANyCubic and BIQU printers above. They are both pretty good but very different. The BIQU Magician is fully assembled and dead easy to get printing with, but the build area is small. The ANyCubic Kossel Linear is essentially a box of parts with some mediocre instructions, but once it's together and after some research etc it's a good machine as well. If you want 3D printers as a hobby, the ANyCubic is possibly a good fit. If you want 3D printing as a hobby, the BIQU is a low cost way to get going.
  25. One of the things that is very detrimental in America is living in a smallish city (150,000) and not having a car to get around Rockford does have a mass transit system that travels the major streets but due to it's physical size (about 63 sq miles / 167 K Sm) and small population using it can add hours to travel times over car due to the set schedules Larger cities, such as Chicago, have systems that generally run every 10 min, less time during rush hour more late at night My daughter lives very near a "bus stop" (2 min walk) BUT that bus runs only once an hour - so for a 9:15 appointment at VA need to catch the 7:30 bus up to transfer point - the 7:40 connection goes directly to VA - arrives 8:20 <> - not bad 50 min (8 1/2 miles) Big problem is these two only run from 5:15 AM to 6 PM - yep - you'd better be back at the terminal / transfer point or you be walking Coming back can be up to almost an hour longer ( 1 hour 50 min) if you miss rerun bus and have to wait for the next one Uber is $7.50 to $10 each way main shopping area State Street east side - 7:30 am bus gets me to Walmart (12 miles) at 9:10 1 hour 40 min but State Street bus runs every half hour 15 / 45 min off scheduled bus run to daughter's house - so it can take up to 2 1/4 hours to go 12 miles Or 5 hours simply riding the bus for what in a car is less that 45 / 50 min To go from her place to the only enclosed shopping mall adds another bus and 10:20 min to inbound but can be 1/2 to 1 /12 hours extra coming back (again runs only once an hour)
  26. Awesome - congratulations! Are you planning to perfect dual citizenship for your sons? I've been loosely planning to do that for my daughter (born in the US while my filipina wife was a conditional US resident) but have not gotten around to it yet. I want to do it in order to keep the option open for my daughter to own property there.

Just thought I would drop by and say hi (finally remembered my login  )
Just a quick update and to report that rumors of my demise have been grossly exagerated.
While I will never be back to 100%, I am doing quite nicely, or better than expected
There are several things I am not able to do and one is to fly for more than about 4 hours due to cabin pressure, and that really pisses me of as the Philippines has been close to me for nearly 50 years.
The other is I can no longer play the piano, which was my means of relaxation and stress relieving.
I strongly believe that being active, in good health and reasonably fit has enabled me to get back this far.
BTW, I am 82 in a few months and going better than many younger than me.
      Cheers and Keep safe guys
      Ken
