The POTUS

Politics aside.

An American friend of mine, from Bangkok days, just asked me if the Queen (UK) pays rent for using Buckingham Palace.

So, I asked him if the President has to pay rent for using the White House.

Now, I know the President has to pay for his, and his family's food, so I am now wondering if he is charged rent?

William, I went looking just to make sure. But, the Vice-President, who resides at 1 Observatory Circle, doesn't pay rent either. (I haven't really done a lot of research on what costs are shouldered by the VIce-President, during his tenure.)

Does she pay rent? If so, do you have an idea of the cost?

Also, apparently, your American friend did not know that answer?

You are the odd one out Paul.  Most Americans (that I have met or corresponded with) don't really understand Royalty to be honest.

Buckingham Palace is one of the official residences that goes with the job of Head of State.  No rent payable.  Same is true of the White House.

I have been fascinated by Queen Elizabeth II since I was in high school. It wasn't anything we were required to do, for studies. All of my time was personal time that I spent. I would love to be able to meet her one day. But, I doubt, very seriously, that will ever happen. Most people today, I imagine, have little knowledge of what she has achieved in her lifetime. Truly, a remarkable person. Probably, the most remarkable human being on this planet. She certainly is to me, anyway.

You didn't know the President is responsible for his own meals and such? Not official functions, here. Personal stuff.

I'd say you need to find a higher class of American friends/acquaintances to associate with.

I don't claim to know much about Britain, but I know bloody well that the Queen doesn't have to pay rent for the use of Buckingham Palace, and I'm confident that all the Americans I count as friends are also aware of same.
